It was last December 28 when W0LO-TVs
Terry Chick, cigar in mouth,
strolled into the press restrooms at halftime
of South Carolina's 85-81 loss to
Charleston Southern and gave the assembled
media his oracle.
"It's official," he said of the Gamecocks.
"They stink."
What Chick (and anyone else who
covered basketball last year) didn't know
was that just seven days after his pronouncement
the Gamecocks would begin
an 11-game SEC win streak with a
66-56 victory over Auburn, an unbelievable,
gut-check run that silenced
the critics and helped propel South Carolina
to its first-ever SEC title in any
sport.
This season, with expectations having
soared right through the rafters
at Frank McGuire Arena, another slow
start would not only be considered embarrassing,
it would be downright intolerable.
With USC Head Basketball Coach
Eddie FogleFs squad ranked in the top
10 in both the Associated Press (seventh)
and USA Today (eighth) polls,
having been picked to win the SEC title
on Media Day in Birmingham, Ala.,
returning four starters and featuring
two All-America candidates in its starting
backcourt, having Fogler as the re fTTTTVH

"As far as me scoring a lot of points
in an exhibition game, this doesn't mate'
ter. Everybody knows that as Melvin
Watson and Bj Mckie go, so goes this
'g program."
e Watson says ifs imperative for this
l- year's squad to come together early in
the season and play the kind of has
e ketball they played last January and
3- February all year long.
^ But, he also thinks this Gamecocks
^ team has to avoid the kind of overconfidence
that might have hurt them in
the Marathon Oil exhibition.
p. "We have to realize right away that

out. I think it's important that we get
