With this semester's new program there are already more than 900 students enrolled. Fitness coordinator Laina Tharpe expects to have more than 1,000 participants in this year's aerobics program. Blues Travelei SCOTT WINTER Staff Writer I was greeted by the swee sound of "Carolina Blues" when I ai rived late to Blues Traveler's Nov. 1 performance at the Township Auditx rium. The crowd seemed to already b in a frenzy as John Popper's harmon ica took them to another world. I was not able to reach that world until later in the concert, but at the end we all were there. The band played two sets in th evening, with selections off all six of th band's CDs. They played all their hit including "Hook," " Most Precarious and an acoustic version of "Run-around that was absolutely phenomenal. One of the best moments of th night was when they performed th Charlie Daniel's Band hit, "Devil Wen Down to Georgia." This was absolute ly awesome, and I found myself plaj ing the air-fiddle as "Big John" treal ed us to many spectacular harmonic solos. That wasn't the only cover the ban did. "Abs & Ends" is another new class s that works the abdominal and gluteal s muscles. "Cardio Challenge" targets the cardiovascular system and focuses e on resistance training with weights. 2 The aerobics classes are taught by 3 15 different instructors. All are USC e students certified by the Aerobic and l Fitness Association of America. "I tiy to set up the schedule so that 2 if you can only go Monday through Fri2 day at 3:15 p.m., you're going to get dif ferent classes," Tharpe said. "You're 3 not going to get the same class, so you'll be working different muscle groups." gives 'phenome _ Drive," the sold-out crowd was treated to some selections from Beck and The Violent Femmes, amongst others. i t * e I loved the rendition of the CDB e classic, but the song that was a highlight for me was "Mountains Win Again" off CD Four. "At most other places, you don't get the variety that you can here." Students can participate in the aerobics program for $10 a semester. The fees are used to pay instructors and provide buy new equipment. Other fitness centers in the area charge a between $5 and $8 per class or 3>dU a ^ month for aerobics. For a healthy exercise routine, Tharpe recommends attending aerobics classes three to five times a week along with other forms of exercise, like running, cross training or using a stair master. nal' conceit the Township in hopes the band would come out for iust one more song. They didn't disappoint, coming back for a one-song encore, John Lennon's Imagine." Once that was over, Popper did his customary gesture of throwing harmonicas into the crowd. I thought about I moving closer to the stage in hopes of a getting a souvenir, but I value my ap- w pendages too much and just cheered with the rest of the gathering not sitting an arm-length away from the of a era r obag^. The concert, which consisted of about three hours of music, came to an unfortunate end when the members of the band stood in front of the stage and gave everyone a "big Dating Game' kiss" to show their appreciation for the big turnout. ^ As we were walking back to the car, I thought to myself, "Where does this concert rate on the totem pole of concerts I've attended?"
