Jamie Sanderson, a junior broadcastjou
nalism major, wants a future in either politics <
wrestling. While politics is on hold, wrestling tak<
precedence.
As he awaits the World Wrestling Feden
tion's acceptance granting him an internship, Y
has organized his own wrestling league and evei
that include USC students.
The Georgetown Wrestling Associatioi
named so because of its home base in Georgetowi
S.C., had its first event Saturday, loosely title
Wrestlefest I, or GWA vs. USC.
The event was to happen in the backyar
of Earl Shelly, co-founder of GWA, in a ring bui
by the wrestlers. But because of last-minute prol
lems, the match had to be broken down into tv
short matches and a "Battle Roy ale," in which a
wrestlers participate, and moved to a different 1
cation.
^ The setback resulted in some of the US
wrestlers leaving. But, the remaining wrestlei
maae aue witn wnat tney naa. oanaerson saia r
is determined to get GWA off the ground and i
attract national attention.
Sanderson wrestled as "13," wearing a co
tume resembling "Jason" from "Friday the 13th
Fabian Bridges, a junior criminal justice majo
wrestled as "Gravedigger."
Rod Atkinson, a junior sociology major, ar
Chad Washington, a sophomore computer sciem
major, wrestled together as the "Lynch Mob." B
W ology sophomore LaShaunda Kaufman serves i
their manager.
The wrestlers model their moves after WW
wrestlers. No one is badly hurt, the matches ai
scripted and some of the wrestlers wrestle in co
tume. All have "ring names."
Some wrestlers use weapons, such as chai:
and sticks, but "the only people I'm letting m
weapons are people who know how to use them
Sanderson said. "I can make it look real and n
even hurt them."
^ The wrestlers also use props. At one point:
Saturday's event, one wrestler was thrown throu^
a thin wooden table. One wrestler broke a woo
en stake over another's forehead.
The girls are also quick to intervene if th<
think their wrestlers' opponents are being t<

as Sanderson plans to use GWA and

He was told the internship was his, but th

!r> He will work for an independent Conn

The radio station will give him his

known WWF wrestlers, some of which he
already met, like Sean Michaels, The Hardy
and Flash PVnk.

If the WWF schedules a match at the

That event would most likely be televist
a Monday night.
