Really, which USC H^TITTT students can't say they've never been Lean run off a walk way or sidewalk by ' ' a bike rider? None. tr Bike riders pedal through campus and sur rounding areas like bats out of hell. They range % from the Cannondale riding professionals to Huffy 10 speed novices, and they all have one thing in common: They tend to have a blatant disregard for pedestrians and common transportation laws. Bike riding is an excellent mode of transportation. If s healthy for the riders and healthy for the gasoline-and-smog-clogged environment. Bikes make sense. Yet the validity of this statement and others made with the same sentiment are null and void when other Promise Keepers, such % as Manuel Bustillos of Denver, Colo., say, "We are forgetting we are supposed to love our women into submission." Or when Phillips himself refers to exalting Jesus Christ not in the godly, spiritual (and ungendered) state Christians believe He now exists but as "the man Jesus Christ." If the Promise Keepers want to prove they are a group of men interested in supporting their families and communities through spiritual faith, it is imperative the changes be seen not through massive, public gatherings but in small, local actions. Let's see Promise Keepers at the women's shelter. Lef s see them eating lunch at the local elementary school or tutoring teens. Yet, what does it mean? What are we actually celebrating? Homecoming is the one week of the entire school year dedicated to continuing the dynamic Carolina spirit and the pride of belonging to this campus. Though football is not one of the greatest assets we have this year, there are plenty of others that are equally important. Within sports, we still have a promising basketball team, winning the SEC Championship last year. The volleyball, softball and soccer teams also have shined a light on our athletic program at USC. But being a USC student involves more than just sports. This University has great schools. The Honors College program is one of the best in the nation. Our business school has continued to be a point of pride and distinction. The USC Law School is 20th in the nation for the most competitive to get in. Your "ed- P itorial" on the Southern League Wednesday amounts to nothing more ti than a display of ignorance that man- tl ages to contain not one reasoned ar- e gument. Granted, the header reads "In d Our Opinion," but The Gamecock's p readership might be better served if r< you supported these opinions with some p justification. You mount a personal at- b tack on the members of this organi- b zation by asking "Are they racist?" I cl might ask the same thing about the n editorial staff of The Gamecock. I would y have no more reason to do so than you l would have to ask it of the Southern League, however. If you mean to sugrroaf fViof a rnciirrronr>o ol gtou uiav u itouigtutc ui tiauitiuiiai Southern values might necessarily per- ^ petuate racism, you would be mistaken, but at least that would present a valid editorial opinion.
