"When you're preparing for a pageant
you have to prepare your whole self,"
Mizell said.
Both girls emphasized keeping
physically healthy. Sturkie said she has
gotten up at 5:30 ajn. to run eight miles i
a day, normally about three weeks prior
to the pageant. She said you "lose touch
with reality" when stretching yourself
like that.
"Your body has to be in the best shape
you can be in," Mizell said. "I worked
out a lot. A lot."
As for the pageant office's preparations,
Thomas said they must "secure judges"
each year from all over the state and the
nation. This year, she said, there will be
a best-selling author and a producer from
the movie "48 Hours."
"We have interesting judges every
year," Thomas said.

lighting, sound and are chaperones are
people they've been working with for
years, which makes the entire pageant
crew and contestants a tight-knit group.
The girls' families and personal
hairdressers will not be allowed to work
with them while the pageant is underway.
"They don't depend on their parents
that weekend," Thomas said.
The pageant girls do have to find a
lot of money for makeup, dresses and
swimsuits. Sturkie said an average dress
can cost as much as $2,000, and a
swimsuit can cost about $250. Many
girls rely on their families to back up the
cost. Others pay for interview lessons,
and they must catch up with current
events.
Once all of these preparations are
finalized, the preliminary competitions
within the state-level pageant can begin.
There are preliminary swimsuit and
evening gown competitions, as well as
an interview. Sturkie said she feels the
Miss USA system provides one of the
best interviewing processes.
"We have very rigorous interviews
at the preliminaries," Sturkie said. She
said they have greatly helped her in the

Most of her appearances occur on the

parades" has had singing engagements,
speeches at public schools and fashion
shows to attend. She has also entertained
and emceed for all six Miss S.C. USA
areliminaiy competitions and has worked
ivith the Special Olympics, the charity
)f choice for most winners.
"I really wish I had more time to do
more around the state," Mizell said.
That whole experience is something
Sturkie is aspiring for. She realizes the
time and energy it takes to be a queen,
but she does have a life to think about
as well.
"Pageants don't keep you from doing
all these things," Sturkie said.
Sturkie also noted the importance of
big pageants on the national level. If

tier, "school comes second then," she said.
She feels many people are afraid
about that aspect of being a winner ?
having to put educational and career
aspirations on hold.
"A lot of people hate to look at it that
way," said Sturkie, a broadcasting major
and transfer student this semester from
Columbia College. "In the long run, Fll
be so glad I did."
