But Johnson is not letting her
graduation from USC signal the end
of her softball career. It might just be
the beginning.
Johnson received a silver medal
after pitching for Tfeam USAat Superbafl
*97 in Columbus, Ga. She helped lead
the team to a record of 6-1 in the seventeam
round-robin tournament that
took place July 7-13. The team's only
loss was to Australia, 1-0, in the gold
medal game.

USC's oldest living athletic
letterman, Tatum Gressette, died
Saturday. He was 97.
Rnrn Marrh 22 1900 in St
Andrews, Gressette was director of the
South Carolina Retirement System
from 1951 until his retirement in 1972,
was head football coach and athletic director
of The Citadel from 1929-39,
and was captain of the 1921 USC
football team.
He put his biggest mark in the
Gamecock histoiy book on Oct 28,1920,
when his 25-yard drop-kick field goal
lifted USC over Clemson 3-0, the first
victory over the Tigers in eight years.
Gressette went on to be named to
the USC, The Citadel and South
Carolina Golf Athletic Halls of Fame.
He was also the honorary chairman of
the USC football centennial in 1992
and was named to the school's all-time
football team.
Off the field, Gressette was
appointed the director of the South
Carolina Retirement System in 1951.
He was later named president of the
National Association of State Retirement
Administrators, the National Conference
of State Social Security Administrators
and the National Council on Tfeacher
Retirement.
He stayed on the field until he was
62 as an official.
Services were held for Gressette
Monday at First Baptist Church in
St. Matthews.

when it lost to Canada. It was also only
their third international loss since 1986,
which, ironically, have all come in
Columbus.
Johnson contributed by going 2-0,
both complete games, allowing only six
hits. She allowed only one earned run
and recorded 22 strikeouts.
"It felt a lot different," Johnson said.
"Ifs two totally different atmospheres.
