We're headed into the year
2000.
USC has a great plan to
cany the campus into the new
century with beautiful new
buildings and equipment.
Unfortunately, some of us
students may be entering tne
new millennium via rowboat
if we're in the Russell House
basement.
It seems things are literally
falling apart around here these
days.
In case you haven't noticed,
large portions of Russell House
are closed due to flooding after
some pipes burst over the
weekend.
In addition, a couple of
weeks ago, the service elevator
that goes down to the Carolina
Mall caught on fire.
It really seems like things
are going wrong all over the
place at USC.

university is spending money
on building new dorms and
renovating others.
That's fine.
We'd all like to see some
neat new buildings around
campus, and some snazzy new
dorms would have to be a real
improvement.

Not too long ago, golf had
a pretty sketchy reputation.
It had been known under
many guises?a sport for only
white men, a sport for the
wealthy, a sport for the middle
aged.
On Sunday, that stereotype
was broken forever by a 21year-old
named Tiger Woods,
who, in case you didnt know,
won the infamous Master's
Golf Tournament at the
Augusta National.
Not only was he the
youngest person ever to win
the tournament, but he was
the first African-American
and the first Asian-American
to win the tournament. With
his -18 score, he had the lowest
score ever for the tournament
and won by the largest margin
of victory ever?12 strokes.

Plus, who more than
current students (future
alumni) want USC to look
fabulous and appealing?
But it's possible that this
university is losing sight of
its priorities.
After all, what is more
important, building a brandnew
dorm that makes USC
look good publicly, or keeping
Uou students sate on campus:
There are many wonderful
older buildings all around
campus that are used by
students each and every day.
But these buildings are old
and they do need to be looked
after frequently.
Nothing is less cohesive to
a good learning environment
than fires and flooding.
Plus, the students
concerned are tuition-paying
college-goers.
And while USC should
definitely be concerned with
attracting future students,
tne university certainly owes
its current students something
for all that money.
Nothing could be more
important than the safety of
students.
After all, we're the ones
who pay the bills.

All Star Cafe restaurant chain.
Some say he's become a fresh
new spokesman for the game
of golf, giving it new life and
a whole new look.
Whatever the case, Tiger
Woods deserves to be
commended on his historic
rise to the top not just because
he's African-American, AsianAmerican,
young or even a
powerhouse.
Rather, he deserves to be
congratulated because he has
an incredible talent that has
