SECRET SAMADHI Live
One of the first things you notice about Live's
third release, Secret Samadhi, is that it's an easy
album to enjoy.
After only a few listens youll be humming the
melody of "Gas Hed Goes West" or singing the chorus
of "Graze." This doesn't mean that Secret Samadhi
is a bad CD, it just means that Live has followed-up
their breakthrough release, Throwing Copper, with
another album full of catchy "alternative" rock songs.
With song titles like "Merica" and "Lakini's Juice"
(not to mention the album title), you'd think that the
music on Secrkt Samadhi would have a foreign
influence. Instead, the album features the same postNirvana
music that bands such as Bush and Silverchair
are trying to master.

Rock and roll from the 1970s is hardly considere
the darling of music, especially classical music. In fac
the '70s were a boil on the butt of existence in moi
respects.
But minimalist composer Philip Glass continues 1
challenge that idea and change people's perception <
music. Glass1 new symphony, Heroes, is based on tl
1977 David Bowie album of the same name. Tl
symphony takes the musical themes, melodies an
harmonies of the Bowie album and repeats and modifii
them in Glass' typical minimalist style.
Minimalism is a style defined by intentionally limitii
the music. It tends to involve a great deal of repetitic
of the musical themes with slow progressive chang<
to the ^hemes. Basically it involves eliminating as muc
of the music as possible.
Minimalism is actually originally based on Asia
music. In fact, Glass studied with famous sitar play<

But live is better than both of those bands because
they have steadily progressed with time. Each oi
their albums is better than the last, and Secret
Samadhi should easily bring them the same amount
of success they received with Throwing Copper.
Though their music isn't distinguishable from
other rock groups, Live is a smart top 40 band. Ed
Kowalczyk and company have turned up their guitars
for Secret Samadhi and created some of the best?
and catchiest?songs of their three-album career.
The first song on the album, "Rattlesnake," sets
the tone for the rest of the CD. It begins with a
haunting guitar chord and has an irresistible chorus.
"Lakini's Juice," the first single, is a grinding rock
song thafs better than anything on Throwing Copper.
Other potential hits include the aggressive
"Insomnia and the Hole in the Universe,"
"Heropsychodreamer" (featuring strange lyrics like

i heart) and "Century."
Perhaps the best song on Secret Samadhi is
"Ghost," which features Elysian Fields' lead singer
Jennifer Charles. With Charles providing chilling
background vocals, "Ghost" is a slow and melodic
song thafs similar to their inescapable hit "Lightning
Crashes."
Kowalczyk's lyrics are confusing and often strange.
For example, on "Century," he sings: "Everybody's
here / Puke stinks like beer."
On the annoying chorus to "Unseathed," he
proclaims that "Free love was just another party for
the hippies to ruin."
Despite the lyrics, Secret Samadhi is Live's best
album. Though it doesn't break any new ground
musically, it will definitely produce a lot of hit songs.
