NCAA Women's Final Four On Monday night, the sixth-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team defeated ritth-seeded George Washington 62-52 to move on to the Women's Final Four for the first time in the school's history. The contest was played in Frank McGuire Arena as Columbia served as the host city for the 1997 NCAA - Women's East Regional Finals for March 22 & 24. The other teams playing in the East Regional Finals were the No. 1 seeded North Carolina Tarheels and the second-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide. The Fighting Irish will go on to face the Tennessee Volunteers in Cincinnati on March 28. The winner of thafcontest will go on to face the winner of the Stanford-Old Dominion matchup for the 1997 Women's I\ LAA iNationai Championship. Softball The Lady Gamecocks have won 28 straight games dating back to a 1-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA on Feb. 21. The Lady Gamecocks are currently ranked 4 th in the nation and will play doubleheaders against WInthrop (Mar. 27) and Kentucky (Mar. 29 -30) to close out the week. Softball Head Coach Joyce Compton needs only two more victories to clinch her 700th career win in her 21st season of coaching. Compton is in her 11th year as a Lady Gamecock coach and has run her career record to 698-251-1. Senior All-American Tina Plew is also making news lately as she has tied the school record for career doubles with 51. Baseball The Gamecock baseball team has been putting up some huge numbers this season on their way to a 20-7, 54 SEC record and a 20th ranking by USA/Baseball Weekly. Western Carolina was the latest victim of the Gamecock hitting * WtcC' barrage on March 19 as U JV> blistered WCU 30-12. Carolina is currently second in the SEC after being picked to finish 11th out of twelve SEC teams. Rob Streicher had his third two-home run game of the season in the Gamecocks' 8-5 win over Mississippi St. last Saturday. Streicher is leading the team with 10 home runs. Women The women are currently ranked fourth in the country and here is a list of some of the NCAA Qualifiers. Sophomores Mark Catalano and Stewart Ginn finished with a three-round total of 213 and tied for 11th place among individual finishes. Freshman Brent Roof currently leads the team with a 72.76 stroke average and two top 20 finishes while junior Jake Kransteuber is second with a 72.86 average and two top 10 finishes. Women The USC Women's Golf team is currently ranked 15th in the nation and finished 11th in the Lady Gamecock Classic last weekend. Freshman Camilla Faaborg-Anderson posted scores of 77-73-78 for a three-round total of 228 and a 23rd place individual I finish. FaaborgAnderson has finished up as the top Lady Gamecock in six of these season's seven tournaments. She also leads the team with a 1 stroke average of ||| Senior Karen second at 78.47 and freshman Emma Lofgren is third with a 79.48 stroke average. C Sports Information Tennis i's meets. Bridges untry. The 32nd ranked Men's Tennis team lost two close matches against third ranked Kentucky and 33rd ranked Florida last week. Freshman Olof Akesson has won his last thirteen matches in a row and upped his record to 19-2. Women The 16th-ranked Women's Tennis team won both of its matches last week against non-conference opponents Texas Christian (7-2) and Brigham Young (7-2). I he two wins improved their record to 7-4 and the Lady Gamecocks will face Mississippi and LSU this week. Swimming Men The Men's Swimming team finished the season at 8-5, 2-3 SEC. Freshman Chad Sheldon posted scores of 478.50 on the one-meter board and 521.20 on the three-meter board (good for seventh place) and clinched a spot in the NCAA Diving Championships on March 2830 in Minneapolis. Nine swimmers clinched spots on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Senior Jonathan Rehberg led the way with a 3.941 GPA. Women The Women's Swimming team won three of their last five meets to finish the season 7-7, 1-5 SEC. Senior Jessica Nixon finished tenth in the 100 Breast and 43rd in the 200 IM to round out a solid showing in the NCAA Championships last weekend in Indianapolis. Nixon and six other swimmers made the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Junior Alison Kemmerling led the women with a 3.733 GPA. Equestrian The equestrian team finished its first season on a high note last Saturday. They secured the Zone 5 Region II Reserve Region High Point Championship. Seven of these Gamecocks qualified for the Zone Finals on April 12 in Wellesly, Massachusetts: Adriana Black (novice flat), Lisa Dunwoody (novice flat), Shelby Lowden (open tlat), Leslie McDill (intermediate fences), Christina Perrine (walk, trot, canter), Courtney Rampey (walk, trot, canter), and Katherine Runyan (walk, trot). The National Finals will be held May 3-4 in Holyoke, Massachusetts in which the top two riders in each class will compete.
