But, that doesn't mean USC has to miss out on experiencing the NCAA tournament. USC is hosting the Eastern a Region "Sweet 16" and "Elite 8" women's playoff games, beginning Friday and ending Sunday. Not only is this tournament exciting for the teams participating in it, but its also pretty exciting for USC. Ok, so you're still sour that USC lost. Yeah, we all are. And, you probably think nothing will ever be able to replace the fact that the Gamecocks lost. Don't be dismayed. There's always next year for the Gamecocks. Far now, vent your leftover basketball energy in this weekend's NCAA tournament in Columbia. So, you may not have enough cash to score a ticket to the erames. But. if vou set , - Anti-hate ( ^ should pre With the rash of recent church burnings, legislators are passing more anti-hatecrime legislation. This legislation, condemning hatecrimes and serving up a 1 minimum sentence for offenders, is something we could all agree needs to be passed. Trouble is,there's a fight as to whether or not homosexuals should be protected from hate crimes. Now, we may be mere college students to these state _ representatives and senators, H but even we see the logic some of these people are lacking. One's sexual orientation does not determine whether or not a person is considered a citizen of this state. Therefore, homosexuals are legal citizens of this state. As such, they deserve the same protection as heterosexual citizens. We really do not see how legislators such as Charlie ^ Condon can have the audacity to try and give discriminatory protection to the citizens of this state. Condon seems to have this problem allowing his religious beliefs to interfere with his job as an elected official of the state. In the past year, women's basketball?both amateur and professional?has grown tremendously. This past summer in Atlanta, the US women's basketball team won the gold medal. Several women's professional basketball teams have surfaced across the country. There are teams in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. (among other cities). There are also two leagues: the Women's National Basketball Association and the American Basketball League. Columbia and USC have been given an awesome opportunity to host a piece of the NCAA Tournament. Not only does it let us still be a part of the game, but it also lets enjoy it as well. ?rime bills itect all protecting citizens of this state from anti-hate crimes through legislation, whether or not he approves of the citizens' lifestyle. Fifty years ago, one certainly did not see state legislatures writing anti-hatecrime legislation on behalf of African-Americans. Fifty years ago, a church burning would have produced absolutely no political reaction. Now, it's suddenly a bad thing and all the responsible people under Governor Beasely are going to stop these atrocities, gosh darn it! Well, how about anti-gay crimes? They do exist, only they do not get as much attention because the public consists of unsympathetic people such as Condon. Condon is trying to pass his piece of PC legislation simply because it looks good and he does not have to advocate homosexuality in any way. Holly Cork, R-Beaufort, is trying to pass hers in order to protect all the citizens of South Carolina, white, black, male, female, heterosexual and homosexual, not just a select group of citizens that happen to have current public sympathy. We hope this fairer legislation is passed. 9 iiifliH loose * USC * Colombia, SC 777-7726 Adam Synder ne; 7774249 ?ffice 777-6482 Jason Jeftfem Cartoonist Ben Muldrow Melissa Sellers Graphics Editor Online Editor NlklaLaRoeque Laura Day Asst. First, I would like to say that you and others with opinions similar to pours are ignorant of what the Greek system here at USC is all about. To start with, the Greek system offers Lifelong brotherhood or sisterhood to its members. I will walk away from college with many friends, memories and a commitment when many will walk away with only a piece of paper. Next, the Greek community works hard to devote time to needy causes in the community.
