The Lady Gamecock
basketball team was coming
off a tough road schedule
that included conference foes
Alabama, Tennessee and ,
LSU.
All three teams were
nationally ranked and all
three dominated the young
Lady Gamecocks.
The team returned home
Wednesday night to try and

win.
The only other SEC win
forUSC was a win over SEC
cellar-dwellar Kentucky at 1
home in January.
With the Auburn Tigers,
the Lady Gamecocks were J
facing a team with a 4-6 SEC !
record and losers of their
last two games against !
Tennessee and Alabama. 1
The outcome was never 1
in doubt as the Lady Tigers
stormed out to a quick 11-2
lead behind the play of senior
forward Tara Williams, l
Williams completely
controlled the inside as she 1
hit shot after shot and
grabbed every rebound in
sight.
Williams had 17 first half

The bad got worse in the
second half as Carolina went
down by as many as 31
points as freshman guard
Tiffany Krantz nailed threestraight
3-pointers to open
up a huge lead.
Sophomore guard Nikki
Miars held the team together
as best as she could by
nailing two quick 3-pointers
late in the game.
Freshman walk-on Sara
Hadwin from Columbia's
Dreher High School provided excitement
for the crowd in
the waning seconds. Hadwin
was fouled on a lay-up and
made the free throw to give
her three points.
The Lady Gamecocks
struggled from the field as
they hit only 19 percent of
their shots, including only
17 percent from long-range.

Bulldogs' mini-rally by going
on a quick 6-0 run to take a
23-13 lead with 8:26 left.
It was sparked by a
dominating defensive series
for USC. Davis' block of Virgil Stephens'
shot led to a Herbert
Davis jumper on the offensive
end.
On the next defensive j
position, Watson grabbed the
ball out of Stephens' hand as
he was attempting a shot,
threw the ball upcourt to L.
Davis, who performed an
acrobatic left-hand lay-up to
"put USC up 23-13.
USC took its largest lead
of the first half at 15 when
Wilbourne scored on a 1
turnaround jumper.
Wilbourne was USC's
leading scorer in the first half, i
scoring 14 points.
The Gamecocks made 17 \
of 33 shots from the field in I
the first half for a 51.5 I
percentage. USC also made I
four of nine, 3-point attempts I
in the first half.
Next game: The
Gamecocks travel to Tennessee
on Saturday. Tip-off is set for
12:30 p.m. and will be \
nationally televised by CBS. '
