The feared Triple Threat" trio got
a little help from their friends Saturday
in USC's 76-68 win over the Florida
Gators.
With guards BJ McKe, Larry Davis
and Melvin Watson posting average
numbers, the No. 19 Gamecocks were
fueled by another threesome ? Ryan
Stack, Herbert Davis and William
Gallman ? that fueled the men's
basketball team to their 12th straight
win, 11 coming in the Southeastern
Conference.
The Gamecocks' winning streak is
tne secona-iongesi in tne nation to
another Palmetto State team, the College
of Charleston Cougars, who have won
14 in a row.
USC (17-5,11-0) came out flat in
the first half and found themselves down
at halftime, but used a 15-5 run down
the stretch to put away Florida, which
dropped to 11-12 overall (3-7 SEC).
And it was due in large part to Stack,
HJL Davis and Gallman, who adequately
filled the usual suspects' shoes with 18,
12 and 11 points, respectively
"In the second half, offensively I
thought we were terrific with our zone
offense," USC coach Eddie Fogler said.
"We were able to pound the ball into
the block, and of course Stack and
Herbert Davis offensively gave us a big
lift in the second half."
With the three guards scoring a
combined 34 points ? subpar considering
their 44.3 per-game average ? Stack,
Herbert Davis and Gallman more than
filled the void, outscoring the more
heralded trio by eight.
None was more impressive than
Stack, who showed presence in the paint
seldom seen before Saturday.

In tallying his career-high point total,
Stack unleashed skyhooks and spin
moves on the way to an almost perfect
7 of 8 shooting night.
After finishing the first half with
five points and three turnovers, Stack
reasserted himself in the second half,

eight of the second half, sparking the
Gamecocks' decisive second half run.
"I hope whatever he had today, hell
take the rest of the year," said Watson,
who had 11 assists in 35 minutes.
"Usually, everybody keys on the three
guards.
like Fve said all year, this is a team
effort, this is why the streak is
continuing," Watson said. "When we're
not performing well, like today, Ryan,
Herbert Lee and Gallman stepped it
up."
Step it up they did. Freshman-guard
H.L. Davis, who has been blistering
from the field of late, continued to sink
big baskets. With USC behind 39-38 at
the 15:43 mark of the second half, H.L.
Davis soared to the basket to tip in a
missed shot, giving the Gamecocks the
lead for good at 40-39.
He canned a 3-pointer 48 seconds
later, and another with 11:30 left to put
USC up by six, 48-42.
After McKie took a pass from Watson
and scored with 9:18 left, USC took a
56-46 lead, its largest of the game.
The Gators never recovered from
the 26-14 run.
"Overall I'm particularly pleased
with our second half considering that
we came out and we weren't particularly
sharp," Fogler said. "They are hard to
play when you're big because they're so
small."

votes to

Students who apply for admission to
USC will have to meet higher
qualifications beginning in August 1998.
The Faculty Senate voted to raise
the admission standards so that students
with a "C" average must make a 1500
on the SAT.
The Admissions Office proposed a
plan in 1993 to increase the standards
gradually, and the results would be
reviewed every few years, Admissions
Director Terry Davis said.
He said they felt a gradual change
would be more appropriate than a large
change. This is the third increase in the
last five years.
"Overall, we have had more and more

Davis said. "We c?ntinue to have a bigger
and bigger freshmen class."
Faculty Senate chairman Henry Price
said one of the reasons the university
wanted to raise the standards was for
memberships in the American Association
of Universities (AAU). The AAU consists
of 62 universities across the nation with
the best research facilities. Universities
are chosen based on, among other things,
the quality of the student body.
"As the standards go up, the pool of
students increase," Price said.
Over 90 percent of the Faculty Senate
voted in favor of the admissions increase.
It was conducted by voice vote.
According to The State, the standards
now require a student with a "C average
to make a 1400 on the SAT to be admitted
to the university.
Davis said the school does put more
emphasis on grades than SAT scores.
Students applying to the university with
a GPA of 3.0 must have a minimum score
of 800 currently. In 1998, students must
have at least a 900. Students who have
a higher GPA can have a lower SAT
score.
Davis said these new standards have
not significantly hurt the university's
enrollment. She said that there is
sometimes a slightly smaller enrollment,
but not a large decrease.
Price said that in 1993 the university
expected a decrease of 200-300 students,
