Star Wars Special Edition

Last Friday Star Wars exploded back
onto the big screen, earning $36.2 million
for the biggest January opening in movie
history.
Perhaps more than any other movie ever,
Star Wars seems like it was made soecificallv
for big screen enjoyment. Frop sweeping
desert landscapes to fast-paced space battles, not
an inch of the screen is wasted.
Judging from the crowd's reaction, none
of the $15 million spent to refurbish the film
was wasted.
Not surprisingly, the scene of Han Solo's
conversation with the all-new digital Jabba
the Hutt received the most applause, and
laughter, from the audience.
Plus, with new digital sound, TIE fighters
scream over your head and explosions shake
you in your seats.
Most of the changes, though, are barely
noticeable and serve mainly as enhancements

to the film's already significant special effects.
The colors are brighter, the lightsabers
are sharper, and various other special effects
have been cleaned up. For example Luke's
landspeeder looks like it's floating on it's
own instead of rolling on hidden wheels that
were just rubbed-out of the negative.
Amazingly, most of the special effects
from 1977 still stand up on their own, even
with today's high standards.
But with all of the new effects, the story
of Star Wars is what still draws crowds.
People can't help but be drawn into the lives
of Luke, Leia and Han as they battle Darth
Vader and the evil Empire. , .
Although the movie is 20 years old, and
most people have already seen it, the audience
still laughed when Luke whined, booed when
Darth Vader appeared and cheered when
the Death Star exploded.
These group reactions are part of the
reason why Star Wars needs to be seen in
a movie theater to be fully appreciated.
And after last Friday, people realized all
over again that you've never seen Star Wars
until you've seen it on the big screen.

Room on Thursday night, fans can
probably expect his set to contain a

surprises won't surface. After all, Sweet

Sky on Mars, but his Thursday show
