With words of thanks

Student Government President
Patrick Wright, the 1997 SG
elections officially started
Monday.
Mandatory meetings
represented the last obstacle
before actual campaigning could
begin. By the end of the day,
many candidates had blanketed
the campus with campaign
posters and flyers.
Dozens of hopefuls
packed the RH Theater as the
Elections Commissions ^outlined
rules for campaigning.
Commissioner Manisha Shroff
emphasized one of the major
themes of this meeting-candidates
would be allowed to correct
their campaign violations
during the campaigns.
"Poster infractions can
get petty," Shroff said.

of the previous campaign rules.
In the past, five infractions
of any kind would disqualify
a candidate. For example,
five improperly displayed
posters would constitute five
infractions.
In this election, candidates
will be notified of alleged
violations on the day the
Election Committee receives the
complaint. The candidate will
have until 5 p.m. the following
day to correct that violation. If
the violation is corrected, the
candidate receives a warning. If

In general, the idea is a sound idea,"

The President's student-service
initiative, AmeriCorpe, helped more than

college, Clinton said. He said he wishes

Though the amendments
are the commission's
attempt to boost the number of
candidates involved in the election,
according to Shroff, the
commission has not begun to see
the fruits of their labor.
In comparing Election
1997 to previous elections,
Shroff said, "the candidates filing
for office, in general, is
down. It is a lot lower than
expected for executive office."
Shroff described voter
turnout in the past as "sad."
She said, "We have around
28,000 students, and no more
than 10 percent of the student
body votes in (SG) elections."
Students who dread the
endless solicitation by some candidates
have little need to worry.
Person-to-person distribution
of campaign materials is not
allowed until election day. Stickon
decals are allowed, but must
