If you think you hate Shakespeare,
Director Jayce Tromsness wants to
see you at TYustus Theatre.
Shakespeare's The Merchant of
Venice will be playing at Trustus from
Jan. 31 to March 1 at 8 p.m.
Tromsness encourages people who
would not normally see a Shakespeare
play to see The Merchant at Trustus
because "it's not Die Hard Part Nine,
but it's definitely not boring."
The Merchant is a play full of love,

Shylock.
They agree that if Antonio cannot
repay Shylock, Shylock can cut a pound
of flesh from Antonio's body. However,
when Shylock's daughter Jessica runs
away to marry a Christian, Shylock
becomes angry and decides to get his
revenge on Christians by demanding
the pound of flesh from Antonio when
Antonio cannot pay him.

George Lucas decided to call it quits
and not continue with plans for a ninepart
epic.
Now, 20 years after "Star Wars,"
Lucas lias picked up where he left off,
and preparations are under way to
film episodes 1 through 3. But before
they start coming out in 1999, Lucas
is refreshing the audience's memories
by re-releasing the first trilogy, episodes
4 through 6, starting Friday.
"Several years ago, we began to
wonder what we were going to do for
the anniversary," Lucas said in a press
release. "I suggested we try to release
all three films as a trilogy, one righafter
the other, and within a few weeks
of each other. This would allow
audiences to experience them like
Saturday matinee serials, which they
closelv resemble. Because I've always
seen the three films as one epic story,
this seemed to be a very appropriate
way of celebrating the twentieth
anniversary."
Lucas is also using this opportunity
to clean up the special effects and even
add some scenes to present the movies
as he originally intended.

Tromsness sets the play during a
Venetian carnival in February. This
setting intensifies the revenge element
in the play because vendettas were
traditionally carried out during this
carnival.
The play is traditionally a comedy,
but it seems to be a tragedy to a modem
audience. The Christian characters
treat Shylock badly because he is a
Jew. Shakespeare chose to make the
bad guy in the play a Jew because the
society that he wrote for was mostly
Christian, and the audience would not

but Tromsness says that Trustus'
presentation does not attempt to ignore
the anti-Semitic tones. Tromsness
says that Shakespeare was a product
of his time. In Trustus' production of
The Merchant", he attempts to say,
"Yes, this is how it was, and this is
awful, but how different is it now?"

to address whether his character should
be a victim or a criminal. Instead, he
portrays his character as a real man,
not the traditional caricature.
Kaplan says that Shakespeare's

people who have wants, affections and
desires. He says, "Seeing Shakespeare,
everything comes alive."
