From South Carolina
to Massachusetts,
freshman Herbet Lee
Davis has returned
to his home state to
olav basketball for
the Gamecocks.
NATHAN BROWN Staff Writer
Down by six points with two
minutes left in the championship
game, what do you do? Well, if you
are Winchendon (Mass.) Prep, you
give the ball to Herbert Lee Davis.
Facing future teammate Antonio
Grant and the squad of New Hampton
Prep, Davis hit a couple of shots to
move his team into the lead by one
point with six seconds remaining. I
After fighting their way back,
Davis and his teammates lost at the
buzzer. Despite the heart-breaking
loss, Davis said this event is the most
memorable of his career so far.
"It was fun just competing and
knowing that I could compete," Davis
said.
While at Winchendon Prep, Davis
averaged 13.0 points and 3.0 rebounds
per game and led his team to a 22-6
record.
"Herbert Lee brings athleticism
and outside shooting to our team. He
has good skills," USC head coach
Eddie Fogler said. "Herbert Lee's last
two years at Winchendon Prep have
helped him both on the court and in
the classroom."
After completion of prep school,
Davis was approached by several of
the nation's top basketball programs,
including UMass, Florida, and
Maryland.
However, he chose the Gamecocks
because he wanted to be near his
family. Having a close relationship
with his family, Davis said he liked
the idea of his relatives being able to
see nearly all of his games.
The Georgetown, SO, native said
the presence of family members and
the familiar surroundings of South
Carolina made him feel more
comfortable attending USC.
Upon his arrival in Columbia,
Davis was faced with the rigors of
the Gamecocks and their schedule.
"The competition is hard. You
have to work to get an edge," he said.
However, hard work is an attribute
familiar to Davis. His work ethic was
instilled in him years ago by his
mother, Lillie Geathers. 1
Applying the standard shown to
him by his mother, Davis said he
hopes to find his comfort zone at Frank F

said, are his weaknesses. *
On the flip side, he said "doing I
the little things" and hustling are the ?
best aspects of his game and his
greatest contributions to the team. 1:
Davis said he feels the Gamecocks
are capable of winning the SEC and c
advancing deep into the NCAA t
tournament. ?
