'Red water'
may occur
MARTHA HOTOP News Editor
Columbia residents may notice a reddish
tint to their water in the next couple of
weeks.
The reddish tint is a side effect of the
corrosion inhibitor being added to the
Columbia water system around the first of
December. The corrosion inhibitor will help
the city's water supply meet State and
Federal Regulations on lead concentration
in drinking water.
The inhibitor is a 50:50 blend of a
ortho/poly phosphate compound. A total
concentration on one ppm of phosphate will
be detectable in the water system, after the
inhibitor's added.
"The inhibitor is colorless, odorless and
harmless," Columbia engineering technician
Jackie Prueitt said.
According to the City's "Lead Public
Education Newsletter," "when added as
part of the water treatment process, the
inhibitor circulates through the distribution
\ system and enters interior plumbing systems
in homes and buildings. The inhibitor
produces a protective coating inside the
pipes by reacting with dements in the pipes."
Such a coating reduces the corrosion of

as the inhibitor reacts with the pipes in the
distribution system, rust may come loose.
As rust comes loose, a reddish discoloration
of the water, known as "red water," may
result, Prueitt said.
"I advise residents not to use [extremely
reddish waterl for cooking or drinking,"
Prueitt said. "It also has the potential to
stain clothes when washing them [in reddish
water]."
Residents who experience orangish, red
water should contact the city's lead
information line at 733-8253.
Prueitt said when residents call, the city
J) will begin flushing the water lines. This
will usually return the water to normal
color within a couple of days.
Residents in older buildings are more
likely to experience "red water" because
their pipes are joined with lead sodder,
Prueitt said.
Up until 1925, pipes were made from a
lead material. Then after discovering the
health risks from drinking water containing
lead, the federal government banned the
use of lead pipes. However, the copper pipes
used were soddered with a material
containing lead particles. In 1988, South
Carolina banned the use of lead sodder.
Over time, the body stores and builds
up all the lead it comes in contact with,
Prueitt said. Therefore, drinking water
containing large quantities 01 ieaa causes
serious medical conditions over time: damage
to the brain, red blood cells and the kidneys.
Young children and pregnant women and
their fetuses face the greatest risk from
coming into contact with the lead.
However, lower levels of lead that doesn't
harm adults can cause slow normal physical
and mental development in small children
and infants.

On subsidized loans, the government

Besides Stafford loans and Pell grants,
