The University of South Carolina's
College of Engineering, playing the role
of mother hen, is "incubating" a new
^ high-tech company.
The "chick" is KryoTech Inc., maker
of "turbocharged" computer work stations,
which was hatched this year by a small
group of engineers with strong ties to
the university. The company uses
temperature-reduction techniques to
enable computer chips to perform up to
35 percent faster than normal.
It is the first "incubator" project
attempted at USC and, though it is still

Moreover, KryoTech is blazing a trail to
future collaborations between USC and
new industry.
This is the way to start high-tech
companies," said Allan Quick, KryoTech
co-founder and president. Quick is a 1968
USC electrical engineering graduate.
"You get them started here, and they
will stay in the area. We would like to
be the first of many."

However, Quick said he hopes to
maintain strong ties with the university.
Citing the planned center for cryogenic
science and technology, to be spearheaded
by mechanical engineering Chairman
Bill Ranson and physics Professor Paul
Hurray, Quick said his company plans
to play a major role in supporting and
applying technology developed in the
center.
"We will try to keep a presence here
at USC, as long as they will let us stay,"
Quick said. "It has been extremely
beneficial." :
