In fact, soul searching is a major
theme of this record, as Perry shares
with the world the frustrations of having
experienced the ups and downs of the
music industry.

compelled to leave
the group and explore new things, which
included starting a record label (Rockstar
Records), producing a movie ("Pink As
the Day She Was Born") and writing
the material for "In Flight."
As she describes it, this album is like
"a little diaiy." The CD, produced by Bill
Bottrell (Sheryl Crow, Rusted Root),
contains 12 dark, moody songs about

With song titles like "Knock Me Out,"

easy to see that Perry addresses a lot of
deep, personal issues on this record. On
the surface, it may seem as if she hasn't
recovered from being labeled a one hit
wonder.

Musically, the songs on "In Flight"
are as light as a feather, which is a
contradiction to Perry's overpowering
vocals. Whether it's the quiet whisper
of "Taken" and "Machine Man" or the
roar of "Freeway," Perry always keeps

With all of this eloom and doom, ifs
refreshing to see that Peny hasn't entirely
forgotten how to have fun. "Fruitloop
Daydream" recalls her former band's
quirky image as she describes "the park
on a Sunday afternoon" by conversing
with "drag queens" and "speed freaks."
The lines "this aint no walk in the
park but I call it my home...hey mister,
spare a sister some change" may very
well refer to her pre-4 Non Blonde days,
homeless on the streets of San Diego
and San Francisco.

Who would have thought that the
quirky lead singer of the 4 Non Blondes
could produce such dark, moving music.
With this solo release, Linda Perry is
back and in full force-and we are all
better off because of it.

They danced unusually together to a

At times, the play moved slowly,
but overall, this mixture of movement

After the play and the audience
