After dropping their first SEC-match
of the year to Kentucky Friday night,
the Lady Gamecock volleyball team
bounced back to sweep Tennessee in
Knoxville Sunday, 15-12,15-8,15-11.
"Anytime you get a win on the road,
3-0, you've played well. It doesn't matter
where you are or which SEC schdol that
you're at. I was very happy with the
way we competed today," head coach
Kim Hudson said.
Carolina came out to prove that Friday
night's loss was a fluke and took their
frustrations out on the Volunteers.
Junior Heather Larkin, last week's
SEC Player of the Week, led USC with

Columbia native and sophomore
Cindy Robarge played a solid match with
11 kills and a .421. Because of her efforts
against the Volunteers, Robarge was
named the USC Female Athlete of the
Week by Spurs and Feathers.
In game one, USC and Tennessee
were tied four times early when Larkin
knocked down a kill to take an 8-7 lead.
Freshman Fernanda Laires followed up
the kill with an ace, one of three on the
afternoon, to extend the lead to 10-8.

Women's Soccer
The University of South Carolina
women's soccer team fell to the No. 8
nationally ranked Gators of Florida
Friday, 4-0, at Eugene Stone Stadium
in Columbia.
Carolina was outshot, 32-6 as the
Gamecocks' record drops to 6-7 overall
' and 0-5 in the SEC on the year, Florida
improves to 10-1 and 5-0 in the SEC on
the season.
Florida's first goal was an unassisted
tally by Lisa Olinyk at the 28:43 marie.
The Gators scored again before the break
at 39:02 when Danielle Fotopolous took

Carolina took a 14-10 lead on a kill
by Lori Drost. UT rallied to pull within
two points at 14-12, but Shani Abshier
stepped up with a key kill to clinch the
game at 15-12.
Larkin had six kills in game one while
Drost had five.
In the second game, UT jumped out
to a 7-3 lead. South Carolina then went
on a 12-1 run to take game two. Carolina
went ahead for good at 8-7 on a kill by
Larkin. USC won the game 15-8 as
Robarge knocked down an impressive
seven kills in the game.
In the third game, the Gamecocks
took a 5-4 lead on an ace by Stacey
Donham. With the score standing at 74
in favor of USC, the Volunteers went
on a five point run to take a 9-7 lead.
Carolina went on a five point run of their
own, keyed by an Abshier ace. Carolina
settled down to win game three and the
match, 15-11.
"I thought that after the Kentucky
game, we came back and showed what
we can really do. Even though it was a
bad game at Kentucky, we played really
well today," Robarge said after the match.
The game Robarge was talking about
was a 15-13,15-13,11-15,15-6 loss to
the Wildcats in Lexington.
Once again Larkin led the team with
a Erin Baxter pass and blasted a shot
passed Carolina junior goalkeeper
Amanda Sandling.

"We didn't play bad," Hudson said.
"[Kentucky] played tonight with a lot of
enthusiasm. They hit the ball really
well. I thought we were a little flat. I
thought it was a very good volleyball
match, we just didn't come out on top."
With the score tied at three in game
one, Carolina scored seven straight points
to make it 10-3. The Wildcats fought
back to. trim the lead to 10-8. USC put
three more points up to make it 13-9 but
UK battled back to tie it at 13-13 before
going on to win 15-13.
Larkin had five kills for the Lady
Gamecocks in game one.
In game two, Carolina went up 8-3.
USC went up 11-7 before the "Cats battled
back to tie it up at 12. Kentucky stepped
up with crucial blocks and won game
two 15-13.
Carolina came out after the break
and went up 8-5 before Kentucky tied it
up at 10. Larkin had two key kills to
spark the Gamecocks to a 15-11 win.
In game four, Carolina once again
was up early, this time 4-0. Kentucky
tied the game at five and didn't look back
as they won game four, 15-6.
"I felt we played good all weekend,
we just didn't come home being 2-0,"
Gamecocks scored 623 points as William
and Mary clinched the women's title.
Ivana Skladana once again was
Carolina's top finisher, in 23rd place,
with a time of 18:01. Finishing second
through fifth were: Maiy C. Bany, Joyce
Peebles, Karen Padula and Suzanne
Higgins.

After the weekend matches, the Lady
Gamecocks stand at 14-4 overall and 51
in the SEC. They have started the
SEC with their best record ever.
Carolina's previous best start was last
season, when in the first six matches
they were 3-3.
The Lady Gamecocks volleyball team
moved up to number two in the District
Four rankings announced by the NCAA
Tuesday. Carolina vaulted to number
two after defeating Auburn, who was
ranked number two.
*Tm excited for the team to be ranked
so high in the District. We still have our
work cut out for us in the SEC, but I
think we are really coming together as
a team," Hudson said. "Our match with
Georgia on Friday night is another
stepping stone in our season. We have
been looking forward to this match for
a long time."
It is only the second time Carolina
has been ranked second in the District
ever, having finished the regular season
last year at number two.
USC will host the slumping Bulldogs,
who are 8-9 overall, 1-5 in the SEC and
have lost five SEC matches in a row, 7
p.m. Friday night in the New Facility.
