More than four years since their last album,
Social Distortion finally released "White Light
White Heat White Trash."
The record went through many production
delays, a new drummer and rewrites before it
landed in record stores. The last time Social
Distortion released an album, no one knew about
Hootie or Snoop Doggy Dog. Alternative music
(in marketing-ploy tarns) didnt exist, and President
Clinton didn't have control of the country.
MTV pushed Social Distortion a little in 1992,
but not enough for a real breakthrough. Two

Social Distortion did so many things before
they became easy. Singer Mike Ness and his
band have been playing since the very late 1970s
when it wasn't as easy or cool to live the punkrock
lifestyle.
There were no punk-rock stores in the malls,
no MTV endorsements, and guys like Mike Ness
had to crawl up fire escapes to get into the bar
they were playing that night, just so they wouldn't
get harassed by the drunks hanging outside.
Social Distortion signed with a major label
company in 1990 before it became equated with
selling out. Social Distortion influenced the two,
most popular punk bands today: Green Day's
"Pulling Teeth" would never have been written
if Social Distortion was not around; and Rancid
has credited Social Distortion as one of its greatest

Little Monster." It's not as influenced by blues
as Social Distortion's past two records, but centers
on the band's punk roots.

made an album not exactly old school or retro,
but not cutting edge either. "Gotta Know the
Rules" and "Pleasure Seeker" are the quickest

Feelings" from "Somewhere Between Heaven
and Hell" in 1992.
"White Light..." deals primarily with Ness'
tremendous want of and need for forgiveness. A
recovered heroin addict and alcoholic, Ness" lyrics
have dealt often with the repentance of his foimer
life. This album has an even sharper focus on
Ness' maturity and embrace of God, the "White
Light" of the album. In his early 30s, Ness is older
and wiser than when Social Distortion dropped
their first record in 1982.
In 15 years, the lyrics have changed from the
punk rebellion "They tell me, but I tell them/ I'll
do it my way and I always will" to simply "I was
wrong." The album's first single develops from
Ness' realization that there is some downfall in
his "me against the world" attitude. "Self
destruction's got me again" does not deal with
Hush releases

Ness' horrifying past, but lies in a more positive
cradle.
Ness has always been very personal in his
lyrics, "and this album gives even more insight

the Angels Sing" alludes to the drug addiction
he kicked almost 10 years ago.
The song continues "I hope I was everything
I was supposed to be, when the angels sing."
Ness has been forgiven by the God in which
he believes. If he hadn't been, Ness would still
be self-destructive in a pleasure- seeker way. The
only person who can't or won't forgive Ness is
the person staring back at him in the mirror.
"White Light..." is Social Distortion's best
record since their 1982 debut. It's definitely
poised to be one of the five, best albums at the
end of the year.
