In an attempt to combat nationwide drug

Gingrich announced that he and Senate

Clinton, Dole
reinforce ideas
of first debate
ADAM SNYDER Staff Writer
In a townhall format, President Bill Clinton and former
^ .i-kt-TNi j j ; J iJ _l
senator dod uoie squarea on in tne secona round 01 me presidential
debates last night.
Dole and Clinton took to the floor to field questions from
fellow Americans. Citizens of San Diego surrounded the candidates
physically and with questions.
The two candidates answered questions and provided
rebuttals to their opponents comments on issues. For the most
part, the debate remained civil.
"They have a different style. Dole is attacking. Clinton is
playing not to lose," senior Justin Hill said.
"I think Dole did too much mudslinging," freshman Natasha
Richardson said.
Much like the first debate in Hartford on Oct. 6, Dole opened
the debate attacking and jabbing at Clinton, but the President
refused to respond at first.
"Many Americans have lost faith in the government," Dole
said. "They see scandals on an almost daily basis. They see
ethical problems in the White House today."
"No attack ever created a job," Clinton responded. Then he
later said, "I could answer a lot of these things tit for tat. But
I hope we can talk about what we're going to do in the future."
Tm very disappointed in the American public and the lack
of character not being an issue. I think this shows the moral
decline in?America and where we've gone in the last century,"
senior Wayne Ridgeway said.
While Clinton seemed to dodge ethical questions, a member
of the audience asked Dole if he believed his age is an important
issue.
Dole responded by saying he has the experience, the knowledge
and the wisdom to lead the country into the 21st century.
"It is the'age of his ideas I object to," Clinton said.
"When you don't have any ideas, I guess you say the other
person's ideas are old," Dole retorted.
"I'm going to vote Republican, but I think the debates hurt
Bob Dole. He's not as smooth as he needs to be and part of that
is that he is an older man Youth is in in America and Bill
Clinton comes across as very appealing," Ridgeway said.
"I think the president's age doesn't really matter," Hill said.
Issues of health care, medicaid, medicare, taxes and military
spending were discussed by the candidates. Most comments
rehashed those from the first debate.
"Politicians are good at not actually saying anything at all,"
Hill said.
"I don't think the debates really change anything, and I still
haven't decided who I am going to vote for," Richardson said.
Not all eyes were on the San Diego debates. While the three
major networks carried coverage of the candidates, FOX had
Game Six of the National League Championship Series.
"I'm not into politics that much and could really care less.
To me all that stuff doesn't affect me right now, but it will when
I get older," senior Brad Davis said.
