Sports bditor While most students were relaxing and taking advantage of the Labor Day holiday, USCs soccer and volleyball programs got their 1996 seasons under way. The men's soccer team was stunned this past Sunday in a il-0 loss to Davidson. Carolina was ranked sixth in the nation by Soccer America, and third by Soccer News, going into the game. It was the team's first loss to the Wildcats since a 2-1 loss in 1990. Junior Phil Julien scored die game's only goal and Davidson goalkeeper Matt Hill preserved the shutout, the third of his career. The women's soccer team also fell to Davidson on Sunday, 2-1. Freshman forward Jennie Ondo scored USC's only goal. The Lady Wildcats won the game on forward Ginny Dye's goal with only 24 seconds left in the match. The men's team plays its home opener Sunday against Furman at the Graveyard, while the women travel to UNC Charlotte on Friday. Hie women's volleyball team started their season off on a positive note after posting a 2-1 record at this past weekend's Shamrock Invitational Tournament in South Bend, Indiana. The Lady Gamecocks started Friday night with a 3-2 win over the University of Toledo, with game scores of 15-5, 12-15,4-15,15-11 and 15-9. "The first match was an indicator that we're going to struggle in our leadership role because of the youth on our team," Coach Km Hudson said. Sophomore Cindy Robarge led the charge against the Rockets, adding 15 kills and hitting .344. Carolina then defeated the University of Central Florida Saturday 3-2, in a match which saw three finish in double figure kills.
