started to
"hardwire" certain dorms, where
students will be directly connected
to the University computer
network, without having to dialup
with a modem, like they did
last year.
TTiis process has been a long
time coming for the University.
Where as most major Universities
in the country are just finishing
networking all their dorms
together, USC is just getting
started.
Last year the only doim on the
network was Bates House, and
this year Preston and Sims were
added. That's a total of three
dorms on campus that are on the
network, out of a total of 22 dorms
on the Columbia campus. This
means a whopping 14% of the
Dorms here at Carolina are
networked. So if you're not lucky
enough to be accepted to the
privileged community of Preston,
and you don't want to live in the
strange and mysterious land of
Bates or reside in the overcrowded
dorm for upperclassmen girls
called Sims, you're SOL.
But, if you are lucky enough
to live in one of these donns, the
Ethernet connection to the network
is very nice. It provides students
with a connection to the USC
"backbone", which is the entire

Some people fear a national
registzy will vilify people who have
been convicted of sexual abuse
and forever label them sexual
predators, but that's exactly what
they deserve. Sexual abuse is not
a one-shot crime - those who
commit it tend to make a habit
out of it.

abuse ruins the fives of its victims.
It's time America stop

should tell us that.
If we can't keep repeat sex
offenders in prison, we should at
least have a national registry set
up so we can protect our families
and children when these predators
move into our communities.

But, there are state universities
that have much better systems
than we do, and that's what USC
needs to compare itself to.
