of the "Save the Wedge" campaign. The ]
campaign, designed not to raise funds 1
but to raise awareness about the Wedge,
was begun during the spring of this year 1
as a response to the announced closing 1
of the program by the Provost office. <
"Initially, we wanted to save the '
property and the program," Sy said, i

about keeping the program alive. That
was the focus of "Save the Wedge;" to
hopefully change the USC 1
administration's mind through letters
and proclamations. Recently, according
to Sy, a Charleston newspaper published
an editorial about saving the Wedge.
The rest of the vector borne disease
research world is very interested in the
survival of the Wedge. The World Health
Organization sends students abroad to
USC for short courses. Those will end
along with programs for USC Public
Health students.
"I think it is short-sightedness by
the administration," Sy said.
The reason being is that the Center
of Disease Control in Atlanta has
announced plans for surveillance and
training for infectious diseases. Sy said
that most infectious diseases are vector
borne diseases. Because USC will be

Although the campaign to save the St
Wedge has ended, Sy and others hope
that the university will retain ownership
of the plantation for its historic registry.
Die group wants to honor the previous
owner of the land and plantation that
sold it to the university at a generous ^
price.
SG
If the university does not retain
ownership of the Wedge, the Board of ?
Trustees is looking for other owners. ^
Three possibilities have been mentioned:
the U.S. Forestry Service, Interests of
Historic Preservationists, or owners of ^
other plantations.
Funding has been cut for the Wedge
as they prepare to wrap up their
programs. It is now operating on about ?
$150,000 as opposed to over $500,000 ?
in the Dast. sp
"This funding enables us to continue
minimal staffing and maintance of the co
Wedge property until we determine its ai
future. Previously, the Wedge funding
exceeded $500,000 per year," stated cc
President John Palms in a budget K
analysis memo to the Board of Trustees. ]
Coston called the Wedge decision to ai
end programs a very logically one.
"When you don't have money, you B
don't have a program," he said. $'
