Throughout the year The Gamecock
will feature scholarship and fellowship
opportunities available to undergraduate
and graduate students.
The Marshall Scholarship
Each year the Marshall Scholarship
allows 40 U.S. citizens to spend two
years in Britian, while earning a
graduate degree.
Established in 1953 by an Act of
Parliament, the Marshall Scholarship
commemorates the ideals and assistance
found in the Marshall Plan. It was
through the Marshall Han that Britian
received economic assistance from the
U.S. following WWII. The Marshall
Scholarship allows recipients to serve
as ambassadors to the United Kingdom,
thereby strengthening ties between
the two countries.
Scholarship applicants must possess
a minimum of a 3.7 GPA. Applicants

President Clinton celebrated his
half century mark Sunday with an
all-star music and comic affair.
The party, hosted by Whoopi
Goldberg at Radio City Music Hall,
showcased the history of the world
. at its best and worst moments over
the course of Clinton's 50 years.
The celebration was broadcast
by satellite to 20,000 people gathered
at 76 locations around the countiy.
In Columbia, about 500 people paid
$100 each to toast the president at
the S.C. State Museum. "The purpose
of the event is to raise money for
Democratic campaigns on state and
local levels all across the country,"
said Felice Lampert, S.C. Field

million for his campaign. Between
500 and 600 individual donors
contributed $10,000 apiece for the
two-hour show. Ticket prices started
at $250.
Appearances were made by Tony
Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Jon Bon
Jovi and Carly Simon, singing songs
from the past five decades. Other
performers included Maya Angelou,
who recited a poem in Clinton's honor,
and comic actor Leslie Nielson.
Almost every one of the presidents
Cabinet members attended the event
in his or her home state. Vice
President Gore and Tipper Gore
joined the celebration from Nashville.
Tipper, who shares the same birthday
with the president, wanted the
audiences and Clinton to remember
that even though they share the
same day, they don't share the same
year.
Clinton turned 50 August 19.
