Men's Soccer
College Sports magazine, the only
national publication devoted exclusively
to college sports, picks South Carolina
No. 7 in its preseason Division I soccer
ranking. The preseason poll will
appear in the August 96 issue. The
monthly magazine hits the newsstands
July 2. Also, sophomore defender
Tony Soto was named to the
publications preseason All-America
team.
Last year, the Gamecocks finished
the season 16-4 and with a national
ranking at No. 4. They advanced to

including first-team Ail-American
Clint Mathis and three All-South
Region selections in Mathis, Soto and
Kristinn Larusson. The Gamecocks
open the 1996 season on September
1 at Davidson College.
Track and Field
USC junior All-American Dawn
Ellerbe claimed her second national
championship June 19, winning the
United States American Track and
Field hammer title at the Olympic
Trials in Atlanta, Ga. Ellerbe broke
the USATF Championship record and
established the Olympic Stadium
record with her toss of 193*8.
"I am so happy to have won the
title today. Winning the Olympic
Trials just tops off the year for me. I
feel like I have achieved all of my goals
I set this year," Ellerbe said.
The hammer throw is not an
Olympic event in Atlanta. It will be
added at the 1999 World
Championships and is almost
guaranteed to be an Olympic Event
in the year 2000 at Sydney, Australia.
"While I am disappointed the
hammer isn't an Olympic event this
year, I'm glad to have gotten the
experience -1 know it will pay off in
2000," Ellerbe said.
USC freshman All-American
Brad Snyder won the shot put at
the Canadian Olympic Trials and will
represent Canada at the Summer
Olympics. The Windsor, Ontario,
native's toss of 59'11 paved the way
to Atlanta Snyder hit the automatic
standard in May with a toss of 64' 7
and 3/4, but had to finish in the top
three at the Canadian Trials to make
the team. par

USC Head Track and Field
Coach Greg Kraft was named the
SEC Women's Outdoor Track and
Field Coach of the Year on June 24.
Kraft saw his women's team to a
second place finish at the SEC
Championships and ninth place at
the NCAA Championships - both bang
the highest finish ever for the team.
Hie women's program is in its fourth
year.
"This is obviously an award for
the entire program. We worked hard
the past years to build this program. ,
Most importantly it's positive 1
recognition for all our women in the
program and ifs nice to be recognized
by your peers," Kraft said.
Earlier this month, Kraft was
named the District Three Women's
Track and Field Coach of the Year,
also a first-time honor for Kraft.
