Being responsible is part of being independent, and foi students this seems to be a difficult lesson to learn. It seems every year the university fills with people whos< parents apparently failed miserably to teach them the basii necessities of living; how to clean up after themselves, hav< respect for other people, be open to new and different ideas and people, and how to behave like a normal, civilized humar being. It isn't hard to see evidence to back up that opinion. VI lUUf ill any body of water on campus and youll probably see a fev copies of this paper people have left outside that have blowr into our various fountains and have soaked to the bottom Whaf s absolutely amazing about all this litter is there are trash cans everywhere on campus. You can see piles ol trash just feet away from gaibage cans on any given day. USC has a beautiful campus; if s just to bad it only stays that way when students aren't around in large numbers. The lack of respect for the campus is evident in the residence halls as well. I remember living in Preston before it was the residential college and having to wear shoes too see somebody J iL. The telling indicator of how poorly students pick up after themselves is how the campus looks after a weekend when the cleaning people haven't gone by in two days. Look around on a Sunday and you can't miss the damage students do. Having respect for other people and their property is another aspect of living on campus. That wasn't always the case. My first roommate was the president of the residence hi government and the worst example of a human being I ha ever seen. I was glad to be rid of him even if it did cost me r few hundred dollars and most of my R&B collection. Another example of students disrespect for property is tl i graffiti that pops up at least once a semester. No, I'm n c talking about SG election chalk drawings. I'm talking abo 5 the illegible crap spray painted on walls the university hi 3 to spend our money to clean up. It really irritates me th 1 every time I go to my room on the Horseshoe I have to pa a trash can spray painted with vulgarities, t As university students, we are supposed to be expandii l our horizons and opening our eyes to new ideas. You wouldi I know it by how people act. It seems instead of listening ; what other people have to say, students tend to learn jui r enough to support their own preconceived notions, then refill i to accept any new ideas or people. Everyone has to find their niche, but they don't have s curl up into a ball and shut off the rest of the world. Pleas F don't do this to yourselves. There is so much to this worli I and so few simple answers. Somebody else's view of an issue could very possibly ope your eyes to things you have never considered before, or s could bring home to you the importance of beliefs you ha\ s held dear all your life. Either way, there is no benefit to n< listening. The point is, you have to listen to everything one 1 Too often, we just talk past instead of to each other. The university is a community of people who are suppose to be dedicated to improving themselves.
