Bong outside this summer could be hazardous
to your health because people who do not protect
themselves from the sun's harmful rays could
set themselves up to burn and face other skin
problems in the future. *.
Careless protection against the sun today can
mean skin damage tomorrow such as wrinkling,
sagging, premature aging and an increased chance
of skin cancer. The reality of such possible problems
can make the idea of carefree sunbathing appear
not quite as glamorous or healthy down the road.
According to Dr. H. 0. Thompson, a
dermatologist in Columbia, melanoma is the
second most common cancer in North America
and has been doubling in incidents every 10 years
in the past several decades.
So how do we protect ourselves from skir

a large hat or cap to shield your face and sunglasses

may contribute to cataracts.
Second, apply sunscreen.to all exposed areas

may also be dangerous to those taking medication,
so they should be aware whether or not their
medication increases their skin's sensitivity to
sunlight. You doctor or pharmacist should tell
you if your medication would make your skin
sensitive to the sun.
One alternative is visiting a tanning salon.
Tanning salons, however, may be more of a risk
than laying out in the sun, according to the Skin
Cancer Foundation. This is because there is little
known about the long term effects of tanning at
a salon, but it is known that tanning indoors can
cause acute sunburn, eye damage, skin cancer

UVB rays just like the sun...so you're subject to
the same dangers. But, it's a controlled
environment, so you control how much you are
getting and know how much you are getting."
Another alternative is sunless self-tanners.
However, they should not be confused with selftanning
pills which are illegal and not FDA
