LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Void, Sanchez don't

Somewhere, out in the deep, dark, misty shadows of
night...scratched upon a flimsy newsprint tombstone lies the
visage and epitaph of a poor broken man.
His name is Eli Sanchez, and although he (by his own

Media, many of you may never have heard of him.
The story of his brief but phenomenal career is one of
character, hard work, extreme persistence, creativity and
style that disdained all conventional rules of journalism, ethics
and basic rhetoric. It is the story of a man who fought against
terrible odds to achieve his goals. He was a pathfinder and a
poet. Damn handsome, too.
No self-respecting journalism student should be unfamiliar
with his work. As a former student journalist, I feel it is my
responsibility to publicly expose this man for what he truly
is. No longer let him be just a ghost who occupied the hallowed
halls of Student Media from 1992 to 1996 - let the masses
hear his story and quiver in his power!
A man who always had his hands in something, Sanchez
wrote articles and poetry for (hold your breath folks) "three
portfolio editors (and) three GBQ editors." Now, how many
of us can say that? Not me, wow.
He was a true journalist and patron of the arts...err...I
mean indie rock. He was a great friend to his "disgruntled
comrades, the executive board at WUSC." Even in the face
of allegations and investigations by his employer, Sanchez
was obstinately in their corner. How's that for objectivity?
In the name of objectivity, he kept a vigilant eye on other
student publications. He attacked The Gamecock for breach
of ethics. According to Sanchez in the editor's note, page 2 of
The Void, "...unlike The Gamecock of this semester, the GBQ
practices journalistic integrity. We don't quote ourselves about
things we know nothing about."
The note in itself is an exhibition of the true genius that
is Eli Sanchez. In the note, he describes the selection of a

Observe the man's passionate pathos: "Tins tabloid is called
The Void because of the "void" in money that was produced
to make a tabloid rather than a magazine...there is a void
caused by the emptiness that, these false charges (against
WUSC comrades) caused as well as the "void" that the artistic
format of WUSC has left in our hearts." So touching. Pure
intellect. When "Drama" would have worked just as well,
Sanchez waxes poetic with "Void."

emotional wordsmithing, the humble Eli Sanchez was willing
to forgo himself for the good of GBQ and journalism. Like
Jesus, he carried the cross of politics and finance fashioned
by the evil Student Media Empire of Satan. Witness his modest
sacrifice:
"Finally, I have survived the musing of our Faculty Advisor
who is still under the illusion, despite the fact that she was
there when I was named editor, that Cortney Owings is editor,
not me...Let it be known that I am editor, hear me roar! I am
responsible for the content of this magazine because as my
supervisor said about my job, *We need a scapegoat in case
something goes wrong!' So whatever your beef is about a lack
of magazine and being given a tabloid this semester, don't
blame me, 1 just work here!
The editor's note in the Spring 1996 edition of The Void,
creatively titled "Welcome to The Void," is not just an article
but rather the departing words of wisdom and loss other great
poets of high caliber have employed when writing their own
gravestones. The Void is a monument to this great man, his
melee with the Philistines who would consume and destroy
the media giant and his triumphant ability to rise above it
all. He was a man who transformed journalism into frivolity.
"In the tradition of Dennis Miller I will say good-bye.
That's the news and I am outta here." -Eh Sanchez, Class
of 1996, R.I.P.

Health Center deserves

I am writing this letter in hopes that some well-deserved 1

healthcare center. [
On the day before classes started last semester, I was (
returning from Charleston when, through a freak accident, t
my car was hurled into two pine trees at around 65 mph. I t
sustained severe trauma and soft tissue damage to my neck.
This resulted in severe chronic neck pain that made me want ^
to stay in bed, lay flat on my back, not move around or even c
sit up. i
I will be graduating in a couple of weeks, and this graduation t
would not have been possible without the help and
encouragement of all the people mentioned above. Dr. King, c
with his bag of medicine, from the numerous prescriptions c
to the hours of encouragement, his shared knowledge of what <c
I was experiencing and his psychological as well as emotional i
support. Keith Crosswhite, with all the heat packs and neck ?
massages, who even changed her schedule weeklv so that I
would not have to miss class in order to receive treatment,
the care and concern of all the nurses who always had time
to inquire how I was doing as they saw me come and go on a
regular basis and all of the staff who made my appointments
and led me to the help I so desperately needed.
I have come a long way in my recovery since the day this
accident occurred, and I still have a ways to go, but thanks
to so many kind and caring people, I have been able to achieve
my long-awaited goal of a business degree and will be able to
move on with my life when I am physically ready.
I have experienced, and I am attesting to the excellent
care and treatment available through USCs healthcare system,
and for this I am most thankful.

mmmmmmmmmmm then tire of them in a few weeks. Now
['m more concerned about who's making my shoes, what's

lie world. I realize that having cool things doesn't make me
lappy.
When I learned of the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and
light other activists in Nigeria on Nov. 10,1995,1 was shocked.
Fhese were men who had devoted their lives to peacefully
ipposing the environmental catastrophe and human brutality
;hat was being inflicted upon their people. I was so affected
fiat I dug deeper.
I found that these men were executed by the Nigerian
government for protesting the activities of Shell Oil. For
lecades, Shell's money propped up corrupt and brutal regimes
n Nigeria, and now it seems to have bought them the right
? do whatever they wish.
I also found that the United States is the largest consumer
>f Nigerian oil. Shell needs me and you (and our cars) to
:ontinue with their irresponsible activities. I am going to send
