Careless use of smoking materials 1
led to a man's death after a fire broke '
out in his bedroom early Tuesday
morning at his Pavilion Towers
i apartment.
Fire officials think Brad Bowman,
45, was smoking in his bed when the
fire started. Bowman, who was a
paraplegic, died of smoke inhalation
and carbon-monoxide poisoning,
Richland County Coroner Frank Barron
said.
Bradley Anderson, Assistant Fire
Chief for the Columbia Fire
Department, said the fire started shortly
after 4 a.m. and
was under control at 4:32 am Anderson
said damage estimates are at $25,000.
Anderson said, "There was a smoke

' STAFF REPORTS
For students who need a last minute
tax form, commonly-used forms will
be available Monday, April 15 at a
special drive-thru stop outside the
South Carolina Department of Revenue
Services at 301 Gervais St.
The services were moved from the
Strom Thurmond Federal Building on
the tax filing deadline date.
"Forms will still be available at the
federal building on Assembly Street,
but taxpayers must park and come
inside to get them," said J.R. Starkey,
IRS director of the North-South

Anderson said there are sprinklers fr<
in the hallways and lobby of the se
apartment building, but there are no K(
sprinklers in the apartments.
"Had there been a sprinkler system ?f
in the apartment, the man would likely co
have survived the fire, and we certainly
would not have had as much damage,"
Anderson said.
"It underscores the importance of
not smoking while lying down," he ^
said. "Most fatalities involving smoking o
occur with the victim on a bed or on a ^
sofa."
There were no other injuries. The
fire damage was limited to Bowman s
second-floor apartment. q
