National cl herself int ACH1M HUNT Assist. Sports Editor World-class thrower Dawn Ellerbe, a New York native, is having a tremendous season for the women's track and field team here at USC. The superstar of this year's women's team is junior Dawn Ellerbe, who participates in the 20 lb. weight event Last year, she participated in the discus throw. Dawn has been on a record-setting excursion over the past month winning just about every event she has entered She is counted on in every match by throwing coach Larry Judge to sweep her events to give the Lady Gamecocks position to win their matches. Her first stop was the SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky., which were held on Feb. 24-25. "Sweeping the SECs in the weight has been our goal for two years," Judge said. "I was extremely impressed with Dawn's competitiveness this early in the year." In the SEC championships, Ellerbe made her last throw her best of the day as she hit 68' 113/4" to break the American, Field House and USC record The title was Ellerbe's second straight SEC Championship. She won the discus last year. "On my last throw, I knew I had it won, and I didn't have anything to lose," Ellerbe said after the SEC Championships. "When I saw the throw, I was like Wow! I did it!' We have the best throws program east of the Mississippi." Ellerbe was not giving the program enough credit. She had been there and done just last summer when she won the USATF Hammer Throw Championship. Ellerbe's closest competitor in the event was a fellow Lady Gamecock ? sophomore Lisa Misipeka placed second in the event. "This was certainly one of my goals this season," said a pleased Ellerbe after winning thfe USATF Championships. "I am very excited because Lisa and I went 1-2.1 need to focus now on the NCAA Championship, where we will prove again that we are one of the best throwing programs in the country." Judge echoed those sentiments after the performance at the USATF Championship. "Dawn certainly is one of the finest throwers in the country," Judge said. "Her goal now is to add the NCAA Championship next weekend to her many accomplishments." Well, once again Ellerbe was able to reach that goal. "My goal was to come out with over 60 feet and be consistent. I did not press, but I feel like I throw well. This is one of mv main goals this vear. To win the first-ever championship in this event at the NCAAs is just as exciting." Ellerbe went on to congratulate her teammate, Lisa Misipeka, on a fine performance in the NCAA Championships. She was named to the All-SEC Indoor Team Feb. 28. Ellerbe's lifetime best toss of 68' 11" at the SEC Championships in the 20 lb. weight drew the attention of Track and Field News. They reported her throw in Lexington, Ky., at the SECs as the unofficial world record. Although the event was not sanctioned by any world authority, it is the longest 20 lb. weight throw to ever be recorded. Ellerbe is looking to have a successful outdoor season and build on the momentum she has already created durine the indoor Dortion of the season. Also, Ellerbe is eyeing June 14-23, which is the USA Olympic Trials.
