If s not the big dance. Ifs not a chance
at a national championship.
The NIT, however, is a good
opportunity for a young Gamecock squad
to gain postseason tournament experience
that could be vefy valuable to the building
process of the Carolina basketballr
program.
The Gamecocks (17-11) get their first
chance to capitalize on that opportunity
tonight against the Davidson Wildcats
in the Frank McGuire Arena. The

in the tournament, ran through the
Southern Conference this season before
being beaten by Western Carolina in the
conference tournament finals. Davidson
looked to be a favorite for a NCAA berth
but were snubbed by the selection
committee.
Inis will be the 66th meeting between
the two schools. From 1922 to 1953, the
two schools were Southern Conference
foes. The series started during Carolina's
second year of basketball. Davidson won
10 of the first 12 meetings but the
Gamecocks have won 28 of the last 38.

The Gamecocks would not be able to host
that contest because of an event already
