The album begins with a slight guitar
twang and touch of country and western
straight from the deep South.
Simply put, it sounds like Tracy
Chapman.
The vocals are similar to her first
album. But she develops a different mood
and tone.
On "New Beginning," Chapman
composes melodic, compelling songs with
a dynamic yet subtle force conveying the
theme that faith can bring a new
beginning.
The collection includes solemn and
calming songs to cure insomnia or inspire
poetry.
The music on the album is poetic.
Chapman sings more love songs on this
album than on prior efforts.
She seems wiser and more optimistic.
The album is ideal background music
for playing spades or shooting pool. It's
relaxing and mellow.
In "New Beginning," Chapman
touches on topics from love to trust both

exudes a realistic, social maturity and
a certain degree of optimism.
Chapman sings of her faith in
humankind and the abilities of each man
and woman. As she sings, she tells stories
of her life and focuses on those things
that have touched her or influenced her
character.
The first song, "Heaven's Here On
Earth," reflects an almost humanistic
point of view. She tries to tell listeners
not to dwell on the afterlife but to er\joy
what's here on Earth. The song's
underlying theme is to have faith.
Faith is her motto. She sings of the
faith that helped her out of life at the
bottom of society.
"New Beginning" is about the
corruption and deterioration of our society.
It shows how this stems from the
hopelessness of man and how it is all a
result of the lack of faith in mankind.
Chapman's advice is to start all over,
like she did. The songs show her belief
that if s worth it The problems are worth
fixing, and the rewards are worth the
trouble.

future would be better.
She had hope, but the pain she felt
was more powerful than her faith. Her
songs were realistic yet hopeless.
In "New Beginning," she seems more
confident and looks to the bright side.
She believes in herself and in her fellow

- Chapman was able to reconstruct
both her life and what she thought were
irreconcilable circumstances. That is the
message she wants her listeners to hear.
If the first album was pessimistic,
the second makes up for it with a healthy
dose of optimism.
The most striking song, "Ihe Promise,"
is a song about everlasting love. It's a
song that describes a deep love. A love
that can last for years and one Chapman
trusts will last even longer.
The message of the album is consistent
in each song: have faith in man despite
the flaws of society because we get our
energy from one another.
Chapman believes this energy is what Tr

In a smoky booth beside the bar,
Hernandez and Hylton spoke about their
music and meandered onto a few other p]a

The Lexington-based band will bring
their infectious, jam-oriented music out
of the studio tonight and into RockaMlas" mu
in Five Points.
The six-man band has been putting thi
the finishing touches on their soon-toDe-released
debut album and is looking 0n
forward to tonight's show.
Sourwoood Honey's music is influenced hai
by many different genres, but the jam- the

"We try to stay away from Columbia
