Valentine's Day
not so sweet for
some students
Those without a date shouldn't feel alone
this Valentine's Day. It's also for friends'.
ANGIE CAMPBELL Staff Writer
CECE VON KQLN1TZ News Editor
In the flurry of red roses, balloons and Hallmark cards that
is Valentine's Day, some students find themselves choking on
their candy hearts.
"Whenever you have a sort of holiday that affects a lot of
people, then there s a great tendency for people who are not
included to feel bad," Fred Medway, professor of psychology,
said. "I think that goes for lots of holidays."
For some students, Valentine's Day isn't so festive.
"Valentine's Day is just another excuse for stores to steal
your money and hang stupid decorations everywhere," said
Aubrey Fanner, a criminal justice freshman.
"I personally like to go against the flow and wear black that
day," said Jenny Myers, an English senior. "Besides, the holiday
has become too materialized for my taste."
Medway said people use a lot of different strategies for
avoiding loneliness on a day that celebrates love.
"You can certainly, in your own head, sort of minimize the
importance of it," Medway said. "They basically say it's just
another day. Ifs to sell cards to sell flowers. Ifs for restaurants
to have business, and it's fine if it makes them feel better. To
some degree that's true."
Medway said there are more effective and healthier ways
to view Valentine's Day and suggested students without dates
"get together with a bunch of friends and celebrate your own
kind of Valentine's Day."
Medway said, "Usually psychologists say if you're lonely
the best thing to do is get out and be with other people."
"There's nothing that says that Valentine's Day has to be
a couple thing. By the same token, there's nothing that really
says that Valentine's Day has to be a heterosexual thing either."
"People put too much emphasis on it (the holiday). Ifs like
its lost its meaning," said English senior Lyn Shufl. "Its supposed
to be ahout love, not about whether you have a boyfriend or
girlfriend."
Medway said it's important to note that not everyone who
does not have a significant other is lonely or upset by Valentine's
Day.
"Although research indicates that there's millions and
millions of single people in the United States, there's a portion
of the population of single people who like being single, who
like being by themselves," Medway said.
"Not everybody is bummed out if its Valentine's Day, and
they're by themselves."
