Columbia artist Don Dixon's first
rail-length release on the Sugar Hill
label, "Romantic Depressive," is a beaptiful
and moving collection, but the chance
for mainstream success seems slim.
Dixon plays a soulful, stripped-down
version of the Southern rock that has
become so popular recently.
However, unlike Hootie and Edwin
McCain, Dixon does not resort to silly
choruses and simple pop refrains.
The music on ^Romantic Depressive"
is a combination of Jim Brock on drums
and percussion and, as the liner notes
say, Dixon on "everything else."
The music and lyrics are very similar
to the music of Grammy-winner Marc
Cohn.
Dixon plays a soulful brand of poprock,
which is clearly influenced by
Southern Blues artists. His music is
rooted in the South, and the lyrics are
both simple and straightforward.
Dixon's voice is not so strong as fellow
Columbia musician Darius Rucker, but
he gives his music a heartfelt quality

Up The Ghost" and "Peace For The Last
Time," Dixon reaches out and touches
the listener with the beauty and simplicity
ofv:~ songs.
The music revolves around Dixon's
standing bass and Brock's percussion.

The production is very good and picks
up the soft, subtle changes in the music's
texture.
Although "Romantic Depressive" is
an impressive release, chances for its
success seem dim.
It is likely Dixon will follow in the
footsteps of other talented artists who
could not maintain listener interest.

but was unable to interest listeners in
his second album.
Sadly, it is likely Dixon's wonderful
album will be overlooked in the same
way.
The simplicity and honesty of the
album are what make it great, but may
also prevent it from selling. The music
is too simple to fit into any musical fads,
and listeners will probably overlook it
in their search for the next big thing.

best album of last year (yes, better than
Pennywise and P J. Harvey). The supercool

The most striking feature of Skirt is
singer Robin Wilson, owner of the purest
voice to hit my CD player ina long time.

Wilson's multi-dimensional vocals
sway from bold and powerful, to tender
in the snap of a finger. Wilson's voice
envelops every emotion as believable as
Zack De La Rocha's anger.
To Remind Me" is soaked with a
reserved regret, hiding Wilson's pain
that pride won't allow to surface.

from the dreaminess of "Slow" to the
aggressiveness of "Sprite" to the
mysteriousness of "Fences."
The rhythm section gives the band
a stable base to work from, letting Wilson
and Smith come in and out at will. The

is a smart drummer.

At first glance, Into Another evokes
thoughts of Nine Inch Nails- inspired
industrial noise-rock or spacy guitar
work similar to Man or Astroman.
Into another
Their album cover shows the
foursome in Star Trek-like costumes
lunging toward the camera.
The inside of the album, however,
paints an entirely different picture.
Band members, without costumes,
are pictured separately with pale faces
and somber expressions.
This second impression gives a
much better sense of the music.
From the first notes of "Seemless,"
the band's first full-length release on

different drums and cymbals, he carefully
drops to the torn drums adding to the
haunting appeal of "Medicine."
Skirt's name is as ironic as Better
Than Ezra playing a song called "Good"
At first glance Skirt would seem to be a
reference to female's clothing because
of the band's high female population.
In the CD, Skirt lists the verb tense
of the word which essentially means to

Hollywood Records, it is clear they
play a stripped-down brand of
rock'n'roll.
"Mutate Me" opens the album with
a pounding bass line and loud, angry
lyrics.
The album was recorded at London
Bridge Studios in Seattle, Wash., and
the influences of grunge are clear.
The in-your-face rock is similar

and Soundgarden, and the vocal
harmony of the choruses draws further
comparisons to both.
The lyrics bounce from despondency
to anger and back again.
Lyrics deal with misfits and people
who are suffering, unkind actions and
social injustices.
Throughout the album, singersongwriter
Richie Birkenhead gives
the impression of an outsider looking
in.
In "The Way Down" he writes, "I
was the child pariah you laughed at
when my eyes betrayed the fact that
I was sad."
The tone of the album is best
summed up during "Getting Nowhere,"
when Birkenhead sings, "I have never
been happier/Although I must
admit/I've never been happy at all."
Although the music is a bit rough
around the edges, the production is
very good, and the band polishes its
sound with pop-inspired refrains and
quick shifts of pace.

The true test of greatness is
comparison. In the 1990s, Nirvana is at
the top of the list of musical perfection.
Depending on what happens with
Rage's next album, Skirt is a dose second
