Pitt's character is the schizophrenic
son of a renowned scientist, played by
Christopher Plummer. Pitt, acting as a
clairvoyant of sorts, predicts one day the
human race will perish from the earth.
Naturally, Willis dismisses the prediction.
Yet, within the depths of his mind,
Willis knows clues that lead to the virus's
eventual creation and spread. He tries
to contide this information to his
psychiatrist, Kathryn Railly (Madeleine
Stowe), but she doubts him.
Wilis then travels'to 1996, where he
sees his once hazy visions becoming the
truth. There, with the aid of Stowe, he
relies on a childhood memory and a series
of spray painted symbols from the group
known as the Army of the Twelve
Monkeys, headed by Pitt, to understand
where the virus came from.
There seems to be a lot of information
to cover in this film, and for it to be aptly
illustrated, the actors have to tumble
through a wealth of roadblocks to get to

the meat of the plot. For this reason, m
the first hour of the film is slow, and it I
drags ? immensely.
Within the depths of the lethargic I
first hour of "12 Monkeys," there is 1
confusion, but also a fine acting I
performance from Madeleine Stowe.
Dismiss the thought that Brad Pitt H
is just a pretty boy, because he is far from
that, and this movie proves it. It doesn't
take too much talent to act as if one is
strange, but to convincingly establish
the idea that one is a schizophrenic is
hard. Pitt does this feat with ease and [
obvious skill. Everything from his crooked
grimaces to his cockeyed glances are
convincing and well executed.
Finally, there's Bruce Willis. After
a few years of putting in time on shows
like "Moonlighting" and in movies like
"Hudson Hawk," Willis seems to come
into nis own.
"12 Monkeys" is a well-made movie. H
It will definitely appeal to those who like
loose plots, suddenly connecting themes |n
and Alfred Hitchock-like mystery.
