Olympics commi
for 5,500 'heroes
JENNIFER STANLEY Staff Writer
Look at the person sitting next to you. That
person could become a community hero for the
1996 Centennial Olympic Games.
The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games
(ACOG) is looking for 5,500 community Heroes
to carry the Olympic Torch.
The first of a total of 10,000 torchbearers,
half of which are community heroes, will begin
their 84-day, 15,000 mile trek on April 27,1996.
The trail will cover 42 states and will conclude
at the Opening Ceremony in Atlanta on July 19,
1996.
"Community heroes are the foundation of
America's greatness," said Billy Payne, president
and CEO of the Atlanta committee for the Olympic
Games. "These men and women, with their
diverse backgrounds, are the catalysts of the
programs and institutions that contribute so
much to the future of our communities. Who
better deserves the honor of canying the Olympic
flame than these local heroes who every day, in
every action, bring to life the meaning of the
Olympic Spirit."
An applicant should be 12 or older. They are
not required to be an athlete, but should be
capable of carrying a 3.5 pound torch up to one
