The Gamecocks definitely needed 1
to do some work on the defensive (
coaching staff after a terrible season.
It now looks as though Head Coach
Brad Scott will have no choice but to
rework his staff after the resignation
of assistant coaches Bob Stinchcomb
and Bobby Johns.
Stinchcomb has spent the last two
seasons as the Outside Linebackers
and Special Teams Coach (With the
exception of the kickoff return team
the special teams were also terrible
this season). Johns spent the same
time period as the Defensive Secandaiy
Coach. Both were highly regarded
coaches when they came to Carolina.
I don't blame the defensive Mures
this season on the players. I believe
the defensive struggle was the coaches'
fault. It's the coaches'job to get the
team ready to play (As fer as the game
plan and motivation go) and they
weren't ready for the big games.
If s no secret the Gamecocks didn't
have the depth needed to have a top
was one of the best defensive tackles
in the conference going into the season,
and there were a lot of young lineman
who saw time on the 1994 Carquest
Bowl Championship squad.
The linebacking corps was loaded
with talent until Hank Campbell got
hurt late in the season. The defense
however didn't play well even when
Hank was healthy.
I think the whole defensive staff is
just lucky they aren't coaching at a
university with a rich football tradition
because they wouldn't be resigning;
they would be getting booted out.
If the Gamecocks defense has
another sub-par season next year I
