When all is said and done "The Lost World" is a very difficult book to put down, even on Sunday night at 3 p.m. when you should be studying for a history mid-term. My favorite feature of any Crichton novel is his ability to make science suspenseful. Not only do you want to know whether the hardy adventurers make it out alive, you want to know what on earth sheep meat has to do with encephalitis. And even though Crichton is just writing fiction, you can still get some intellectual stimulation. I definitely didn't know a prion from an icon before I read "The Lost World." And as far as realism extends into the realm of dinosaurs, Crichton is quite believable. The dinosaurs and people all behave in ways which are unexpected but at least are within the world of possibility. r If you're looking for a strong leading lady, then Sarah Harding fills the bill. She even gets to save a man's life-gasp! But here's the bad news: For the most part, ifs "Jurassic Park" all over again. People get trapped on an island with many many bloodthirsty carnivores; some of the people are alive at the end and some of them are dino-brunch. It's also the same cycle as "Jurassic Park." Things get bad, then they get better, then they get worse and then we meet the velociraptors. Personally, the biggest bone I have to pick with Crichton has to do with continuity. Mike, honey, if somebody dies in your first book, let them rest in peace for the sequel. Besides, even if you ignore the hokey method of resurrection and the fact that all the other characters are also recycled with new names, who in their right mind would get eaten by a tyrannosaurus rex and then go back for more? Along these same lines, I wonder who would head off into a land of dinosaurs with a trailer and and a jeep? These are not unsuspecting tourists? they know they are walking straight into the jaws of the tyrannosaur. So, in the end, if you liked "Jurassic Park," youH probably like this one too. If you liked the movie, i don't have a clue whether you'd like the book. But give it a try.
