The National Security Education
Program, NSEP, is accepting applications
for its scholarship and fellowship
program.
Established by Congress at the end
of the Cold War, the NSEP is designed
to meet the national need to stay economically
competitive while enhancing

gram also helps students understand
other cultures by providing access to
language studies.
"NSEP seeks to build a critical base
of future leaders, both in the marketplace
and in government service, who
have cultivates international relationships
and worked and studied alongside
foreign experts," the NSEP scholarship
application said. The program
also "develops a cadre of professionals
with more-than-traditional knowledge
of language and culture, who can use
this ability to help the United states
make sound decisions and deal effectively
with global issues."
NSEP awards both Graduate Fellowships
and Undergraduate Scholarships
to provide students with the opportunity
to leam more about languages,
cultures and world regions not commonly
studied. Students are specifically
encouraged to pursue studies in
all countries outside of Western Europe,
Canada, Australia, and New
Zealand.
Students from a broad range of academic
and professional fields are encouraged
to apply for the scholarships
and fellowships. NSEP hopes that by
participating in the program, students
will be able to intensify and broaden
their graduate studies to include an international
aspect.

During the selection process, the
committee will critically examine the
applicant's study proposal. In the proposal,
students must demonstrate a
clear link between their proposed overseas
study and their academic and career
goals.
Students selected to participate in
the program must complete a service
agreement with the federal government
or in the field of education. The
period of service must be equal to the
length of the student's fellowship. In
addition, students selected for the fellowship
or scholarship must be U.S.
citizens.
A campus representative, Patricia
Wilier, is available to help interested
students learn more about the application
process. In the two years that
the program has existed, USC has had
four winners: two graduate fellowships
and two undergraduate scholarships. <

and undergraduate scholarships

meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 4
