Tuesday, October 10,1995 use do PATRICK DOHERTY Senior Writer The two Carolina's battled it out under a hot Indian Summer sun at the Graveyard on Sunday afternoon, with the Gamecocks emerging victorious over No. 9 North Carolina, 3-1. The mood before gametime was certainly unusual. Prime Network prepared for nation-wide TV coverage by deploying scissor-lifts and microphones all over the sidelines. The athletics department put on the Graveyard's best face by repainting the sidelines and using the WilliamsBrice stadium "Gamecocks" script to decorate the middle of the field. All decoration aside, the soccer match played was a demonstration in gritiness as two of the South's best soccer teams played fiercely, attacking each other relentlessly. "This was an important South region game for us," coach Mark Berson said. "If s a big win, if s an important win over a good team." The Gamecocks found their offensive spark from an unlikely source on Sunday, with forward Chuck Prosser coming off the bench to score the first two of USC's goals. Prosser had played in ! i /t n l 1 il l j it six games oeiore ounaay, dui naa started none. He was also goal-less before the match with UNC. "It feels real good," Prosser said of his performance. "We've had some injuries, but everybody's stepping up." Prosser was in the game for Robbie Pait, who started in place of the injured Josh Wolff. Wolff, if you remember, was one of USC's leading scorers before he was knocked down in the Virginia Commonwealth match. He is expected to be out another two weeks with a broken collarbone. Prosser scored his first goal at the 35:23 mark off a cross-box pass which landed in front of him. Prosser just happened to be about a foot in front of the net. His first shot bounced right off the goalie, but he put the rebound into the back of the net a second later. Tony Soto and David Tart both assisted on the goal. During the TV time-out of the second half, Berson emplored his team to take advantage of the opportunities that UNC was giving, especially on the wings. USC responded to their coach's wishes, and scored two goals in the two minutes immediately after the time-out. At the 69:00 mark, Prosser scored his second goal off the wing with a scorching shot that found the top right corner of the goal.
