These days, when the rich and famous want
to plan a meeting, they might utter the phrase,

the rich and famous (and the not-so-richand-famous)

For those of you who don't understand the
jargon I just slung at you: A PDA is a "Personal
Digital Assistant" (Although, PDA can also stand
for Tain in the Digital Ass," depending on who
you talk to.) This acronym has come to represent
what many in the telecommunications industry
see as the future of scheduling and personal communication.
Yes, in a few years, your trusty DayTimers
and Mortar Boards will have gone the way of the
dodo, only to be replaced with high-speed, hyperconnected
digital equivalents. For some people,
this technological revolution is already a reality
While there is no hard-and-fast rule, PDAs
are usually portable, hand-held devices that
schedule your day, take notes, keep track of contacts,
handle e-mail, etc. More importantly, these
[unctions are done intelligently. Repetitive tasks
are automated by the machine. Communication

Many perform miraculous feats, like faxing,
beaming data through the air, dialing the
phone for you and recognizing your handwriting.
"That sounds nice," you're saying to yourself.
"So, why haven't I seen these things around?"
Principally, PDAs haven't taken off because the
cost for good ones can easily be more than $500.
Because the cost of a PDA is so high, the industry
isn't growing. In fact, some estimates show
it shrinking and recent layoffs by some PDA manufacturers
seem to support those estimates.
This saddens me, because I happen to think
the PDA concept has tremendous potential. Being
the technonerd that I am, I ran out and bought
a PDA as soon as I could afford one. In my case,
the Apple Newton MessagePad 110 has been a
solid performer. However, not everyone is as
fond of intelligent assistant technology as I am.
"I can do the same thing a $500 PDA can do
with a notepad and papeF," is one comment I often
hear. The Newton has taken particularly
bad hits because it uses handwriting recognition
that was, in the beginning, ...uh...less than perfect

there is still room for improvement.
Despite, the shortcomings of the Newt and
other PDAs, I believe that one day they will become
as useful and commonplace as a DayTimer.
It's just going to take some time. Like the first
computers to roll off the assembly lines, the first
PDAs have often been lacking in power and ease
of use. However, also like computers, PDAs will
mature with time, becoming more powerful and
intelligent each year.
Do you really need a PDA? Well, I wouldn't

I guess you could say the PDA is the latest,
greatest toy of the digital age. People justify it
as useful, but really buy it because it's fun. If
you subscribe to the philosophy of "The one who
dies with the most toys wins," then a PDA is definitely
for you. Although, I recently reminded
someone of another motto: "The one who dies
with the most toys, still dies."
In short, if you have $200-$500 to kick around,
then a PDA might be worth considering. But, I
wouldn't go into hock for one just yet.
Will a PDA really help you? WeU, I was chronically
late to classes and meetings before I got
my PDA and I am still chronically late after sev
eral months of using it. I forgot people's names
pre-Newt and I still can't remember them postL
Newt.
So, my PDA has not revolutionized my life,
or freed me from all earthly worries. It is a fancy
method of keeping names, lists, notes and
dates straight. I personally find it to be an effiI

Wars" jedi master, my Newt is small and wise.)
Which PDA is the best? To tell the truth, I
can't tell you because I haven't tried 'em all Unfortunately,
I don't have thousands of dollars to
spend to do in-depth research about which personal
assistant is the best of the bunch. I love
my Newt, but I have no idea how it really compares
to General Magic's Magic Cap or any of
the other PDA-types out there. If you are considering
a PDA purchase, be sure to comparison
shop to find the right fit and functions for you.
And, as my Newton's namesake would say, "May
the force be with you."
