After last year's loss of five senior
starters, the men's soccer team was left
with a lot of inexperienced, young players.
These young players were definite

COLUMBIA 2?Why are the
reigning Carquest Bowl champion South
Carolina Gamecocks still winless in the
Southeastern Conference after four
games?
"Missed tackles," head coach Brad
Scott said Monday. "Poor tackling will
get you beat every time."
The Gamecocks (1-3 overall, 0-3 SEC)
have the SEC's worst defense in three
categories ? total defense, scoring defense
and rushing defense ? after a 3530
loss to Kentucky on Saturday. That
same defense made a hero out of another
running back Saturday; Kentucky's Moe
Williams.
And the nation's No. 14 team, the
LSU Tigers, loom on the horizon.
But all is not lost, said Scott, who led
the Gamecocks to the school's first bowl
victory in his first season.
"If we tackle better, if we execute our
assignments better, well be a better football
team and that's what we need to
emphasize right now," Scott said.
So, coach Scott, when do we panic?
Is the pivotal point this year, the upcoming
game against LSU?
"Well, every game is pivotal," Scott
said. "The fact is, we needed to win last
week, and we need to win this week. So
I don't think you're at the point now in
our season where you say anything is
pivotal. Every one of them is pivotal,
every stinking game is pivotal."
Scott said while no one's giving up
yet, the losses are definitely taking a
toll.
"Right now, sometimes we run out
there and we expect something to go
wrong," Scott said. "We're not expecting
to be able to do the things that we need
to do on defense and to play more consistent
on offense."
But don't blame all of the Gamecocks'
woes on the defense, said quarterback
Steve Taneyhill, who leads the SEC ir
total offense, pass attempts, pass completions
and passing yards.
