Z71 Faculty disinterest
?1 concents senate
j,,.! chaiiman Price
gROB GIOIELU Staff Writer
At the last Faculty Senate meeting two weeks ago,
fewer than half of the elected faculty members were
present, which has brought about major concerns by
jSggljl the Faculty Senate chairman Henry Price.
The main concern of both Price, a journalism professor,
and Past Chair of the Faculty Senate Marcia
I Welsh, a professor in the College of Journalism, is the
general disinterest university faculty as a whole has
shown in faculty government. There are 139 members
of this year's faculty senate and a quorum of 70 members
is needed to vote on all issues brought up at the
meetings. Only 74 members were present for the September
meeting.
Price said that the faculty has the ability to make
.changes and get things done the way they want them
done.
I "If we don't meet our responsibilities then someone
else will meet them for us," he said. "These people
will get the job done. The problem is that the faculty
will quite possibly have a problem with what these
other people do."
In addition, last spring, the senate held a general
meeting where all members of the faculty were to vote
on a revision to current tenure procedures. In one wav
I or another, this vote had a significant effect on all faculty
members, according to Price. Only about one-third
of all voting faculty was present for the meeting.
During her time as chair, Welsh sent out two different
surveys asking faculty members what three major
issues they wanted addressed in the faculty senuamecocK
Only one-third of the faculty responded to the first
ritfM survey, while only about 10 percent of the faculty re'
sponded to the most recent survey, last Spring.
"Faculty governance is something to be treasured,"
Welsh said. "If the faculty aren't there to vote (at the
1, to be in- meetings) then we are giving up these rights. We are
n, WUSC giving them up to the administration."
Due to this recurring pattern of apathy by the facimpleting
ulty, Price is taking some measures to try and reeni
but may ergize the Faculty Senate and the faculty as a whole.
5 this fall. Price said he plans to send out the name, phone numudies
ma- ber and e-mail address of all facility senate commitsejays
the tee chair to the faculty members,
tladioland He said he hopes that if faculty members do have
r test. a problem or concern about something, they will not
lis eye on hesitate to call the chairperson and voice their conmusic
li- cerns. Also, when nominations are made for the vahundreds
cant spots on the university committees in the spring,
Price said that of the two spots usually open on each
edible li- committee, he hopes that one faculty member, sea
heard of soned in faculty governance, and one newer faculty
? member would be appointed. This emphasizes the need
