Tomorrow, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
will invade Williams-Brice Stadium
to take on a USC football team who
is still searching for its first win of the
season, after losing their first two to
Georgia and Arkansas.
When they take the field tomorrow
evening, the Bulldogs will be trying to
open the season at 3-0 for the first time
in 20 years. Tech is coming off a 19-7
win at Houston last Saturday night to
run its record to 2-0 for the first time
since 1992.
The Bulldogs began the year with a
28-21 victory at Bowling Green, the same
Falcon team that won 17-10 at Missouri
last Saturday. Bowling Green had gone
into the season as the favorite to win the
Mid-American Conference after posting
a 9-2 record in 1994.
If Tech wins tomorrow, it will mark
the first time in history that the Dogs
have played their first three games on
the road and won tnem an.
This week will marie Louisiana Tech's
45th road game in their 69 games since
making the jump to NCAA Division IA
in 1989. While Tech has somehow
managed to put together a 33-31-4 overall
record over that time, it is just 1326-4
on the road. This is despite a road
run of 7-1-2 during parts of the 1990-92
seasons.
As for South Carolina, the Gamecocks
are in desperate need of a victory.
In their losses to Georgia and Arkansas,
Carolina has yielded 93 points (46.5 ppg)
and scored just 44 points (22 ppg). The
defense has failed to stop the pass or
rush, and the offense hasn't performed
to preseason expectations, which labeled
the offense as "explosive."
More bad news for the Gamecocks:
Bulldog runningback Jason Armstrong
is averaging 107 yards per game running
the football. If the past performances
of Georgia' Robert Edwards
(Georgia) and Arkansas' Madre Hill
(Arkansas) are any indication, Armstrong
could be in for a field day.
If the Gamecocks are to make anything
positive out of this season, now is
the time to turn the tide. After Tech,
USC continues their four game homestand,
facing Kentucky, LSU, and Kent.

Quarterback Steve Taneyhlll and tl
their garnet Jerseys this season
Saturday at Willlams-Brlce Stadium
would be 4-2 before traveling to Mississippi
State Oct. 14. Carolina fans need
not be reminded of a worst-case scenario.
Louisiana Tech and South Carolina
had never met prior to the 1991 season,
but in four short years, the two have developed
a small rivalry. Part of this is
due to very tight games the first two
times these two met - in 1991, a 12-12
tie and in 1992, a 14-13 Gamecock victory.
The rest of the budding rivalry relates
to an ugly bench clearing brawl
prior to the kickoff of that '92 contest.
It is an event that fans on both sides still
talk about.
There was no such drama in the '93
contest, as the Gamecocks thoroughly
dominated the game in a 34-3 victory.

Wolff is not a total stranger to everybody
on the team, as his teammate
from Parkview High SchooJ Nathan
Watkins is also a first year Gamecock
snrrpr nlnvp.r
"I am quite happy for Nathan as he
is my friend and I will be pulling for him
all the time we are at Carolina," Wolff
said. "It is an advantage to all ready have
a friend on the team coming in to the
new environment and having the friend
makes the transition a little easier."
Wolff has shown a great deal of potential
and has already recognized some
of that with the honors he has received
early on in his career. With continued
playing time and improvement from experience
Jason has a bright future
ahead? not only for himself, but for the
entire Carolina soccer team as well.
Wolff and the Gamecocks will be in
action this weekend at the Graveyard
against Wisconsin in the UMBRO Kickoff
Classic. The game, slated for a 2 p.m.
Sunday, is the first regular season home
game for Carolina.
