Pop quiz, hot shot. You just came off
weekend road trip against two of the
est teams in your conference. What do
ou do? What do you do?
For the Gamecock women's soccer
jam, you put on a clinic for an all-girls
outh soccer league in the Columbia
rea. About 130 girls were in attendance
t the clinic Monday night at the Graveaid,
where they were taught basic skills
ke kicking and goaltending. Head coach
ue Kelly lead the introductions as all
ie members of the team presented
lemselves to politely applauding 4>12-year-olds.
Affiliated with the YMCA, the league
as started four years ago by Chris Weton
and Bubba Hymson. Each had
aughters on an all-girls team, who had
0 other all-girls team to play against
1 Columbia. The solution: start your
vn league. In just four years, the teams
ave grown in size and popularity.
A few months ago, Kelly was speakig

Bubba approached her about having a
clinic with the women's soccer team.
"She was very responsive," Weston said.
"She seemed veiy supportive." The clinic
appeared to be successful for both the
team and the girls.
Speaking of smiles, all reports have
it that the women's soccer team played
their hearts out in defeat against two
of the SECs better teams over the weekend.
Friday night the Gamecocks were
in Nashville to face the Lady Com
modores, one of the best teams in the
country. They were able to keep it close,
only giving up three goals to the Vanderbilt
team. The final score was 3-0.
On Sunday, the Gamecocks faced Eastern
Division rival Kentucky in Lexington.
The Gamecocks played well again,
eventually losing 2-0, but putting up another
strong performance. The team has
an overall record now of 2-2-0 (0-2-0
SEC). Their next match is 7 pm Wednesday
against Appalachian State in the
Graveyard.
