I can't believe the media coverage
that the Charlotte Panthers (If s CharVws/^anap
T rJnn't. mnsrirtar tVio Pan.
thers to be Carolina's team) are receiving.
I think it is absolutely ridiculous.
Yes, the majority of the public in
the Carolinas, me excluded, would
probably like to be updated about the
Panthers on a daily basis. But it is my
belief that the public would not like to
give up their coverage of every other
sport to do so. When it comes down to
it, it will be the small colleges and the
high schools who will eventually suffer.
This is the direction that the newspapers
are headed in. I have built up
a hatred for the Panthers because Panther
mania is so blown out of proportion
(although I probably couldnt pull
for a team who's heme games are played
in Clemson anyway).
fm from the Charlotte area, so even
though it disappointed me, I expected
over-coverage by the Charlotte Observer.
After all, the Panthers are based
out of Charlotte. If you were to pick up
the Observer, you would see that every
day at least half of the sports section,
usually including a third to half of the
sports front page, is dedicated to the
Panthers.
The Rock Hill Herald, although a
smaller paper, is as bad, if not worse
than the Observer about over coverage.
I have always considered the Herald
to be a great paper as far as local
high school sports are concerned. I am
abichieh school fnnthall fan and hnvp
always looked forward to their high
school football coverage. They have always
covered each of the areas' football
teams at least once a week during
August as they prepared for the
season's opener. This season that coverage
dropped off a great deal as the
paper devoted too much time to, guess
who, the Charlotte Panthers.
The television coverage, believe it
or not, is worse than the newspaper
coverage. In Charlotte, every away
Panther's preseason game was played

on CBS live television, and then shown
as a tape delay sometime the next day.
Then the home games were shown just
on tape delays, because the Panthers
could not sell enough tickets for it to
be shown live.
There were also two commercials
that were shown the week after the
Jacksonville game. One commercial
referred to the Panthers as the undefeated
Panthers. The other asked if
the first win over Jacksonville was luck
or just pure talent. Get real! This was
a preseason game between two expansion
teams; someone had to win.
Do the people in the Carolinas really
think the Panthers will be a winner
this season or is it just the Charlotte
media who thinks they are already
in the playoffs?
Well guess what, it's not just the
Charlotte media, either. The State
and The Greenville News have also
jumped on the Panther's bandwagon.
The Greenville News I expected this
from because the Panthers are playing
right uown the road at that farming
school. But The State's coverage
has gotten out of hand. To start with
when you pick up and read an article
on practice the day before you will
swear that it is the summaiy of a game.
But then you realize that it is about
practice because they haven't shown
the game on television two or three
times since yesterday.
All I'm asking is for the media to
calm their Charlotte Panther mania
and give fair coverage to every sport
and team. Cover the Panthers but dont
over-cover. So on Sunday, it's Charlotte
at Atlanta. I bet you can't guess
who m be pulling for - go Falcons.

Despite a lack of senior
leadership, Carolina's
soccer squad closed out
the preseason yesterday |
on a good note
KAYCIE WILLIAMS Staff Writer
South Carolina did not play like
a soccer team who lost six players .
They did not play like a soccer
team with only four seniors.
The Gamecocks played like the
teams before them who made
it to the NCAA Tournament the last
nine out of ten years.
It might have been just an exhibition
but the Gamecock soccer team
looked impressive defeating Presbyterian
College 5-0 last night at the
Graveyard.
Carolina dominated throughout
the match with excellent ball control
and good passing.
The Gamecock offense went on
the attack, getting off 28 shots on goal
while the defense held Presbyterian
to only four.
Sophomore Clint Mathis had a
big night, scoring three of Carolina's
goals. Two other sophomores, Kristinn
Larusson and Marc Anatol, scored the
other two . Anatol's came in the 15
minute overtime added to the match
to work in substitutions. M
