Which is tragic. Because

LARRY WILLIAMS Sports Editor
The Citadel football team is looking
to make as many headlines this seasor
as one of their recent dropouts, Shan
non Faulkner. This probably won't hap
pen, but the Bulldogs are a strong team
ready to return to the front of the Southern
Conference pack and, with some big
wins, could grab achieve some recognition.
With 17 returning starters, The
Citadel will in all likelihood improve or
last season's 6-5 record and be a formidable
foe to conference heavyweights
Appalachian State and Marshall.
Led by former Irmo High School stai
Garrick Haltiwanger, the Bulldogs' offense
will be tough to handle. Haltiwanger,
a junior halfback who also plays
baseball for The Citadel, became an allpurpose
threat last year when he rushed
for 557 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and
seven touchdowns. Haltiwanger also
averaged 21 yards a catch, 20.9 yards
per kickoff return and 8.8 yards a punt
return.
Despite the prowess of do-it-all Haltiwanger,
the strong suit to this year's
team will be the offensive line. Losing
only one member, the Bulldogs return
an offensive line that rolled up 382 yards

Speaking of defense, the key to the
Bulldog's season probably rests on this
side of the ball. Returning only six
starters, there are definitely some holes
to fill.
The Citadel is recovering from the
loss of all three of their linebackers to
graduation. Junior middle linebacker

can fill the holes on defense, and if they
can beat either Marshall or Appalachian
St., good things are in store for the
team from the Holy City.
The OTHER team from the Holy City,
the Charleston Southern Buccaneers.
will be trying to improve on theij* 0-11
record in *94, their first in Division I-AA.
In only their fifth year of football existence,
the Bucs have gone 0-11,3-8,37,3-7.
Despite what the records may
indicate, the Bucs and head coach David
Dowd are showing marked improvement.
This is a very young team," Dowd
said. "But it is definitely the most talented
we've had here at CSU."
When Dowd says his team, is young,
he might be slightly understating things.
Of 72 CSU players, a whopping 42 are
freshmen.
The Bucs return three offensive
starters and four on defense. Something
of mention to USC fans would be that
Marcus Simmons, who was at USC before
transferring to CSU, will be a key
piece in the Buccanneer puzzle. Simmons,
a sophomore, will be the starting
milback for the Bucs.
Another former USC player, placesicker
Clay Williams, transferred to CSU

after a redshirt season at Carolina.
Williams, from Charleston, will also handle
punting duties.
Quarterback Reuben Potts, a transfer
from Gardner Webb, will lead the
offense this season. No quarterback on
the team, including Potts, has any game
experience at the position.
The Bucs will miss departed receiver
Brad Johnson, whose eligibility ran
out last season. The CSU all-time leading
receiver was likely the most talented
player ever in the Buccanneer program.
-
oeiiiui wiue receiver Anare wlinerspoon
should start for the Bucs this season.
Witherspoon had eight catches last
season.
The defensive side of the ball doesn't
have much more experience than the offense,
returning only four starters. As
Dowd says, both the offense and the defense
will benefit from the in-state talent
that is committing to CSU. "We
brought in a lot of players from the state
of South Carolina," he said. "This state
is veiy fertile when it comes to high school
talent, and it helps when you can sign
some quality players to help improve
your program."
