mer Programs, housed on the third floor
on Harper College, has two primary mis'
sions: (1) to help coordinate the many
5 academic programs at USC each summer
for secondary school students and
1 indirectly to begin recruiting these stu
dents, and (2) to identify, recruit and
1 train our finest students for such pres1
tigious scholarships as the Rhodes, the
notary International, the Fulbnght, the
Truman, the Goldwater, the Mellon and
' the Marshall. There are more than 100
: of these type scholarships.
Once identified as potential schol.
ars, students are provided support and
assistance in every aspect of candidacy,
' such as selecting appropriated courses,
; completing applications, writing essay
1 and participating in interviews.
Although the ultimate goal is USC
! students being awarded these competitive
and prestigious scholarships, the
: preparation process for potential scholars
is designed to be developmental and
. rewarding by itself.
The operations of the office are assisted
by an advisory committee repre- I

The Fulbright Grant information session

will be reviewed by a campus faculty
committee prior to being forwarded
for the Oct. 23 deadline.
Rhodes Scholarship offers
two years at Oxford

Thirty-two Rhodes Scholarships are
awarded annually. Applicants must be
U.S. citizens and have been born on or
after Oct. 1,1971, and before Oct. 1,
1977. An applicant must have achieved
academic standing sufficiently advanced
to assure completion of a bachelors before
October 1996. First-year students,
sophomores and juniors are encouraged
to attend the Rhodes Information Session.
Rhodes candidates must be evaluated
by a USC committee for nomination.
The Rhodes Scholarship information
session will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 30 in the
Gressette Room of Harper College. The
campus application deadline is Sept. 25.
British government offers Marshall
Scholarships
Competition for the 1996-98 Marshall
Scholarship has opened The British
Marshall Scholarships, funded by the
British government, were established
in 1953 as a national expression of gratr
itude to the United States for economic
aid under the Marshall Plan after World
War II.

The scholarships are awarded annually
to up to 40 U.S. college graduates.
The scholarships include tuition
fees, a living allowance, fares between
the United States and Britain and a book
grant.
Awarded for two years, the scholarships
enable successful candidates to
study a wide range of subjects for further
degree at any of Britain's universities
and business schools. The selectors
are looking for candidates of high
ability and wide interests who plan to
take up careers not only in higher education
but in commerce and industry,
the arts and professions and public life
generally.
Candidates must have a GPA of 3.7
or better, possess a record of service and
leadership, be well informed on global
issues and no older than 24 as of October
1996.
The information session will be at 4
p.m. Aug. 29 in the Gressette Room of
Harper College. Sept 22 is the application
deadline to be considered for nomination
by the university. No direct applications
to the British Consulate will
be accepted.
